Hebron, New York (WCSO) – According to Sheriff Jeffrey J. Murphy, on April 15, 2023 at approximately 9:53 PM, the Washington County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a female that had possibly been shot near Cemetery Road in the Town of Salem. As patrols responded to the scene, additional 911 calls came in reporting that shots had been fired from a residence on Patterson Hill Road in the Town of Hebron.
Upon arriving at the first scene on Cemetery Road, Deputies discovered a female who had been in a vehicle and was a victim of a gunshot wound. She was identified as Kaylin A. Gillis, age 20 of Schuylerville, New York. She was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Through the preliminary investigation it was learned that the vehicle the victim was in mistakenly pulled into the driveway at the Patterson Hill Road address. The homeowner fired at least two shots, one of which struck the victim while she was a passenger in a vehicle.
Through investigative efforts it was determined that the person who fired the shots was Kevin D. Monahan. Monahan was uncooperative with the investigation and refused to exit his residence to speak with police. He was later taken into custody with the assistance of the New York State Police Special Operation Response Team after several hours.
Monahan was arrested and charged with Murder in the 2nd degree. He was then transferred to the Warren County Jail to be held.
“This is a very sad case of some young adults who were looking for a friend’s house and ended up at this man’s house who decided to come out with a firearm and discharge it,” Sheriff Murphy said.

Perhaps if I were a lesbian it might have in this case.
Even in cases where these people most likely shouldn’t have shot these people, there is a good side...It’s got to be entering the thoughts of the criminal class, that the next target may be armed.
In no state does someone have a right to shoot someone else for trespassing. It is ludicrous to believe that because someone pulls into your driveway you can come out and kill them.
Since when is entering a driveway, without opening a gate, or passing a "no trespassing" sign, trespassing? So in your "mind" you are privileged to execute anyone who pulls into your driveway?
You are either so dimwitted that the other QTips notice, or a troll.
Then again, perhaps I should embrace the power of "and"
When I was soon to start first grade, my family moved to a farm that had a driveway that was identified on the county land plats as an old carriage lane right-of-way that had never been paved or maintained for one hundred and fifty years. From the road it was several hundred yards down the lane, over a hill and then there was a turn off to get to our house. Strangers who arrived there were never on the up and up.
Yeah, I agree. Too simple
But the communist have their story line, or they at least can make one up.
Yep, Was he on his porch with a gun just waiting for a car to pull in? The timing is weird.
Will the racists who showed up here trying to blame the 16 year old shot twice by a homeowner for ringing his doorbell show up and blame this girl too?
Apples and Oranges, can't compare the two even if both are homeowner error.
That is is my guess also. At 65 years old dementia or mental illness could be a contributing factor. I listened to a few minutes of the video. The shooting was way out in the sticks with sparse cell phone coverage..
How the ______ do you know what they did or did not do. There does not seem to be any information and yet we are getting a bunch of screamers with deranged lunatic screeches.
Years ago a former coworker shot and killed a man for poaching on his property. The man was trying to flee in his vehicle when he was shot. The former coworker was charged and convicted. I don’t remember the charge.
Probably manslaughter......................
Assuming there is not more to the story, I wish gun owners would use better discretion. Shooting thru doors or out your window is hardly “self-defense.” Everytime some knucklehead kills some innocent person like this, it hurts the Second Amendment and our cause. Ugh.
“a suburban driveway and there is a rural country so called driveway.”
Absolutely. And if a rural driveway is posted “Private Drive” and/or “No Trespassing” you better not go down there unless you absolutely have permission and business there.
What further info do you expect to come out that could justify these 2 killings this week? It was just a couple of cowardly trigger happy idiots afraid of their own shadow shooting down innocent people for no good reason. They both deserve prison and I expect that is exactly what they will get. Like I said earlier the reason we get more gun laws is because of idiots like this. One thing these threads are good for is flushing out the nutjobs on FR.
Sadly, there have been a few cases of kids shot to death while trick-or-treating.
We live on a rural highway not far from town. Across from us was our Granny’s fruit stand which people would coast into or use as a turnaround spot. They’d also turn into our driveway and ask to use our phone.
If we shot at every stranger who knocked on our door we’d have serial killer like numbers.
Times have changed but as long as I can see their hands and their friends stay in the car, one hand will be on the doornob(with foot braced at the door) and my other hand with my pistol, creary to use.
Haven’t shot anyone yet.
I would add a 3rd category: driveways that lead to homes in the woods. Some neighborhoods look like forests with mailboxes. You can only see each house if you pull up to its driveway. Who wants to risk driving up that long driveway to a house, only to find out you're at the wrong address? I once drove my kids up and down a road for 20 minutes because I wasn't sure which house was their friend's house. Every home on that road was set back in the woods with no address numbers out front. When their friends saw us and stopped our car, I explained in these exact words: "I'm sorry, but I didn't want to pull into the wrong drive and get us all shot." They understood.
I was half-joking. But, sad stories like this one remind us that getting shot while pulling into the wrong driveway is a very real possibility.
Unless the people in the vehicle were aiming guns or firing at the house, I see no way this is justifiable.
