KOed: Amateur boxer knocks out 'Shaolin monk' within 2 minutes at martial arts match in China

Most of us have seen highly-skilled Shaolin monks in movies, where they punish their opponents with an array of slick moves.

Well, in a recent kung fu boxing championship match in Guangdong, a Chinese man claiming to be a Shaolin monk was unceremoniously knocked out by his opponent in under two minutes.

The self-claimed Shaolin monk, Shi Yongjun, was up against a boxing amateur known as Ah Jun.

The match took place at a shopping mall in Guangdong last Friday (April 7), reported Chinese media.

Among the participants were professional boxers, traditional martial artists and even influencers.

Videos of Shi's embarrassing performance quickly circulated on Chinese social media, earning laughs from netizens.

In the clip, Shi, dressed in a monk's robe without gloves, started off the match by moving around Ah Jun, and gesturing frantically.

Unfortunately, his 'moves' were no match for the boxer, who knocked him down easily with two punches in the face.

Despite being floored, the 'monk' regained his composure, got up and proceeded to chase Ah Jun around the ring for another minute before getting knocked out.

While he was lying on the ground, someone asked if Shi could continue the match, and the latter shook his head, with a defeated expression on his face.

After the video of his defeat went viral, netizens started questioning if he was a real monk in the first place, reported 8world.

Even his opponent, Ah Jun, took to Douyin to call his bluff, saying that he was trying to fool others with his fake moves.

Others also began scrutinising his moves in the ring, pointing out that they were nothing like actual Shaolin kung fu.

Chinese MMA fighter knocks out two kung fu 'masters' Unfortunately, Shi isn't the only self-proclaimed martial arts practitioner to have been ridiculed online.

In 2019, a Chinese mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter, A Hu, knocked out two kung fu 'masters' in one night.

A Hu fought a Wing Chun 'master' named Ding Hao, whom he easily defeated by landing a punch flush on the latter's temple, sending him crumpling into the ropes.

His second opponent that night, a Tai Chi practitioner Song De Cai was also dominated in a similar method, receiving several punches to his face and body.

I thought this was another gender bending equality attempt, where they pitch a man against a woman but only where they got a girl to win.

I now realize both were guys.

I guess all this gender nonsense isn’t so popular elsewhere.

Up until I turned 66 years old I was a practicing martial arts student.
(Always a student)

I started when I was 16 and over all of those years, I met, fought and even became friends with some of the stars of the era.

I agree that a majority of dojos started Selling belt ranks after the 70's .. Not so back in my training years!

We didn't get promoted for just displaying forms.(kata's)

We only advanced by beating or matching an opponent who was a rank above.

I got a busted jaw in one match and uncountable broken bones over the years.

As for no one being faster than a boxer .. bull!

A good friend of mine was a pro, undefeated super light boxer who was never able to 'stick me', (his saying) regardless of speed.
(I never had a problem 'sticking him')😂

His ring name was Johnny Compo.
Real name ... John Campagnuolo and was undefeated.
(auto accident took his life.)

I had the good fortune to meet and sit in on a performance by Bruce Lee once.

He would hand a dime to a student, tell him to hold his palm up with the coin in it.

He then told the student to close his hand as fast as he could when Lee went to grab it.

The student snapped his hand shut when Lee went for it.

Opening of the hand shocked everyone. Lee had not only grabbed the dime but replaced it with a quarter.🥴

Like I said, I've met or even had matches with some of the best .. Norris, Bill Wallace, Jim Kelly, Ed Parker, Joe Lewis.
(Look up the last one, he's not the boxer)

I would put a couple in their youth, up against any boxer and that includes Tyson.

My sensei was Shigeru Takashina who went on to coach in the Olympics.

Thanks, I’ll check that style out

There was a karate dude in mma fighting who also dominated for a long time in the heavyweight division- Lyoto Machida-

he was my favorite fighter because of the style he Incorporated into mma fighting. He often fought with hands down, (which is a big no no usually in mma) just out of reach of the opponents striking distance, and leaning backwards to keep his head out of range and would explode with speed and power in a counter punching strike that was really something g to behold.

He also had devestating kicks, and had one of the best front kick knockouts I’ve ever seen in mma.

As he got older though he lost the speed he once had, and the opponents learned to exploit his weaknesses (mostly leg kicks), and eventually he lost the belt. He couldn’t quite connect with his counterpunches anymore, and his hands down, leaning back stance was figured out by the opponents and ended up costing him points eventually.

Everyone scoffed at karate being used in mma- but they dropped their moc,ing when he began destroying his opponents. Many began to imitate his style for awhile after-

I beleive he is now in the mma hall of fame.

The Ultimate Fighting Championship brought style-irrelevant, catch-as-catch-can martial arts (AKA: "cage fighting") mainstream 30 years ago, and it has spawned many imitators (Bellator, One Championship, Professional Fighters League, et Al). From one promotion to the next the specifics differ (size, shape, & configuration of fighting arena, length of rounds, etc) but one thing is consistent across the entire spectrum. Not only are the highly stylized Oriental martial arts (most notably Kung Fu) not dominant, they're not even major players.

All of the giants are dead.
You don’t win fights with “stylized” fighting!

Bruce Lee was not a practitioner of Gung Fu alone.

He incorporated any techniques that enhanced his fighting ability .. including boxing, wrestling and numerous other moves.

A style of No style so to speak.

That is why Dana White called him the father of mma.

And yes He would be a major name in the fights today.

Oh and so would Ip Man.

I mention Ip Man because of your Gung Fu comments.
(Look him up)

Ip man would probably destroy a majority of fighters today .. same as Lee!
As I said, all of the truly great ones are dead!

Yep. That is the story. You could have a real martial arts expert play the role or a fake one. Carradine did okay with the slow mo and weird camera angles to hide the fake. It was still a good series in spite of the “fake” and ranks up there as one of my all time favorites.

Yet, watching Lee in the Green Hornet, I, as a young white boy, would have loved him in Kung Fu. Actually, I was disappointed that the Green Hornet was short lived for that reason. I was watching Batman and Robin at that time. There was even an overlap show with the Green Hornet and BR.
