The first hyper-realistic body of Christ based on the Holy Shroud is on exhibit in Spain

This Holy Week, Gaudix Cathedral in Granada, Spain, is hosting the exhibition of the first hyper-realistic recreation of the body of Christ based on data obtained from the Shroud of Turin.

The exhibit first opened at Salamanca Cathedral in central Spain and will remain in Granada until June 30, after which it will tour Europe for the remainder of 2023.

The sculpture, made of latex and silicone, weighs about 165 pounds.

The posture is of the deceased Christ in rigor mortis. The legs are somewhat bent, hands crossed at the level of the pubis. There is no false modesty in the figure. The entire body of the man on the Shroud is visible, nothing omitted, including circumcision.

Video of the installation

The hair that has been used is human and can be seen all over the body, from the feet to the head with all realism, without leaving out a detail.

When one approaches the figure — with hands behind one’s back in accordance with exhibit rules for visitors — one can observe every pore of the skin, freckles, eyelashes, and eyebrows.

The back is slightly raised, making apparent the lacerations on the head caused by the crown of thorns, and there is a kind of small braid that ties the hair on the back of the head. Also seen are the bruises on the shoulders due to carrying the weight of the cross.

On the skin you can see each of the tearing wounds produced by the scourging and the traces of the nails in the hands and feet, as well as the one between the fifth and sixth ribs on the right side. The nose is broken and the right eye bruised.

While it was on display in his diocese, Bishop Jose Luis Retana Gozalo of Salamanca said that this hyper-realistic representation does not imply a “theological conflict,” because the Mystery has become flesh. On the contrary, “it will be an aid to see the Mystery, a call towards the Mystery.”

In addition to the figure representing the crucified Christ, there is a preliminary exhibit that puts the viewer in context about the reality of the scourging and crucifixion and the research into the Holy Shroud.

The hyper-realistic sculpture tries to present before the viewer a “body of human quality without artistic movement,” without interpretation, made from multidisciplinary scientific data based on studies on the Holy Shroud.

The curator of the exhibition, Álvaro Blanco, who dedicated more than 15 years of research into its realization, gives a lengthy prior explanation of the historical and scientific data that culminates in the hyper-realistic body.

Blanco confessed during the presentation of the exhibition in the sacristy of the Cathedral of Salamanca that at the moment of seeing the finished body he was convinced that “he was before Jesus, he was before the image of the body of Jesus of Nazareth.”

A group of artists created the sculpture under Blanco’s direction.

“The Mystery Man” is presented by ArtiSplendore, a company specializing in cultural and artistic patrimony exhibitions and tourism.

“In the next 20 years we want to go to churches around the world,” said the company’s executive director.

Blanca Ruiz Antón, another spokesperson for the exhibit, told CNA that “Italy will be our next location after Guadix,” adding that though there are no current plans to do so, they “would love to go to the States.”

Taken literally and out of context, the first part of the Second Commandment (prohibiting the creation of “any likeness of any thing”) could be construed to prohibit most photographs, paintings and sculptures. As you correctly noted, this must be read together with the second part, that you shall not “bow down thyself to them, nor serve them ....”

IMHO, this is a work of art based upon a set of assumptions, which may or may not be correct. Even if all of the assumptions are correct, it is still just an artist’s impression of how Jesus appeared under the shroud, with the artist’s imagination, biblical accounts, and two thousand years of prior art filling in the blanks from the limited forensic information that could be derived from the shroud itself. That does not make me appreciate the artistry any less.

I think he got the perfect actor. He is very careful with the roles he accepts and organizations he supports.

I still recall watching one of final episodes of Touched By An Angel. An actor representing Christ was in it. Later that actor was arrested for indecent behavior with a child. I’ve had a hard time watching that series in rerun because of it.

… with a legend attached, that some find convincing.

—> And that faith is more that a confession
Indeed!

It is not intellectual assent but an entrusting oneself to Him completely for salvation.

—> were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea”

They were saved from death by Pharoah… only to perish in the wilderness.

—> Paul

Acts 22:16 (TCENB): He experienced baptism in water several days after he had called on the Lord for salvation. The Lord had already washed Paul’s sins away when he had called on the Lord. Then later Paul arose and received baptism. The Greek word epikalesamenos, translated “calling on,” is an aorist participle meaning “having called on.

I hate to impose reason and yet question whether rigor mortis would apply to a body that “will not see decay” according to the Psalmist. It is interesting to note as well, that the text of scripture is not explicit in stating there are visible wounds upon the body of the risen Christ. The most striking thing about the entire work of Christ and His Gospel to this day, is how His everlasting mercies are hidden under the Cross and not worked out in the glorious fashion we would all expect.

I'm not a theologian, nor do I play one on TV or on FR. I'm also Catholic but I'm not looking to convert anyone. What follows is one sinner's understanding of "why?" A small exposure to accountancy may help.

God maintains a ledger, debits and credits. On the left side (debits) is Goodness, essentially an aggregate listing of all positive things people have done, including sacrifice and fasting etc. On the right side (credits) is Badness, the opposite of Goodness across all people.

With Original Sin, a massive credit entry on the Badness side was posted. This not only shut down Eden, and made man mortal, but it closed the gates of Heaven to mankind.

Over the ensuing centuries, small debits were made to increase the Goodness balance and, to be sure, offsetting Badness entries were made. But that Original Sin credit remained massive, and none of the Goodness debit entries across the centuries came close to offsetting the massive credit. Mankind remained in a massive hole.

Along comes Jesus, living a sinless life as a man on Earth. The Goodness debits grow, and finally mankind via Jesus is making some headway in offsetting that credit/debt of Original Sin.

However, even after 33 years of perfection, mankind remains in the hole. Further, while Jesus is here, the Badness credits keep growing, and they'll KEEP growing when He is gone.

Only ONE act of love - a voluntary sacrifice from a Perfect Man - can not just more than offset the Orginal Sin Badness credit but ALSO raise the Goodness debit balance to KEEP the Gates of Heaven open for all who follow Him, forever.

His Passion and Death caused the largest Goodness debit entry EVER. The Gates of Heaven were opened. And despite continued Badness, that bigly Passion debit keeps the net balance in favor of Goodness.

I hope that helps. Peace be with you - He is RISEN!

**It is not intellectual assent but an entrusting oneself to Him completely for salvation.**

And Israel trusted Moses when he gave them the order to observe the first Passover, and be ready to leave Egypt and follow him (a type and shadow of Jesus Christ). They knew they were choosing to leave the old life behind. A choice they did not have until the Passover broke the curse of bondage to Egypt.

**They were saved from death by Pharoah… only to perish in the wilderness.**

The older generation, but not the younger.
That’s what the remainder of 1 Cor. 10 is about: the Israelites’ examples of not being faithful after great deliverance from the curse.

The ‘new man’ has leave the ways of the ‘old man’; dying daily to the lusts of the flesh.

**Acts 22:16 (TCENB): He experienced baptism in water several days after he had called on the Lord for salvation. The Lord had already washed Paul’s sins away when he had called on the Lord. Then later Paul arose and received baptism. The Greek word epikalesamenos, translated “calling on,” is an aorist participle meaning “having called on.**

That’s like saying the Israelites didn’t need to cross the Red Sea to be saved: no turning away from the expected common sense land route, just go direct to the ‘promised land’.

There’s a reason that the Red Sea was named that. God put algae or coral (don’t remember) there that produces a red tint at times, so man would name that body of water red.

“… with a legend attached, that some find convincing.”

1) This isn’t based on the legend. It’s based on the object itself.

2) What’s convincing is the science of the shroud.

The legend that goes back a thousand years is that it’s the shroud of Christ. It is why it was preserved and treasured. It predates all scientific inquiry.

It may or may not be true.

Many believe it is true.

John 20:27 Then He said to Thomas, “Reach your finger here, and look at My hands; and reach your hand here, and put it into My side. Do not be unbelieving, but believing.”

I only saw it once. I have it on dvd, but I cried so much the first time, I haven’t been able to watch it again. One day, but I will need to be strong to watch it again. It is very hard for me to watch.

Really thinking hard about what God did for us in Jesus is itself enough to take your breath away.

Having had my life saved by others has changed just me.

For the World?

That”s beyond words.
