Best Emergency Food Packets / Ration kits
4/2/2023 | Me

Having survived a close call with a tornado this past Friday night I got a dose of reality and I find I’m taking the health of my family a great deal more seriously now.

That being said I’m looking for suggestions on the best available emergency food rations pack or kits. I’ve looked at the offerings on Amazon but there are several negative reviews and it’s difficult to choose without seeing them.

Thanks for the advice.

I like these guys and have ordered several items from them. The Ready Hour brand is good. Watch the salt content and stay away from TVP stuff.

get some 5 mil 1 gallon mylar bags, oxygen absorber. 300-500cc oxygen absorbers
https://packfreshusa.com/shop/

vacuum pump
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B083RH28BP

a flat iron to seal bag (like one women use for hair)

and stuff your own bags with rice, beans, spaghetti, etc.

Put the sealed bags in plastic buckets (for rodent protection), you can ask supermarkets or bakeries for free empty frosting buckets

Mountain House is the best I have tried. They make the meal then freeze dry it so you are not trying to mix powders in or “cook” foods when you add hot water since they are already cooked. I have tried Wise foods and they are “meh” —they don’t rehydrate as well and don’t taste as good. I tried some Nutrient Survival and it tastes like Wise with a vitamin-y flavor on top of being “meh.” (So it kind of comes down to do you want it to be good tasting and comforting, or are you wanting extra nutrients.) Be aware when you are buying that serving size is not a good rule of thumb because people are going to need more than one serving to feel full. A person could easily eat a mylar MH meal by themselves. Get yourself some electrolyte powder that comes in single-serving packets that can be poured into bottles of water easily.

“Mountain House tastes the best and has meat.”

I agree it does taste good, unfortunately the next day it sucks really bad. So you might survive, only to wish you were dead.

Gas, bloating, 20 bathroom visits and several rolls of tp later and you might feel better

Although some people have no problems.

Mountain House #10 cans are a good option if you are trying to build your “bench”. You can just order one periodically and soon you’ll have a nice supply. Much more cost effective than individual meals and have a longer shelf life. You can order individual food items (vegetables, meat, eggs, etc.) or prepared “meals”.

I use Mountain House for backcountry hunting and find little digestive distress when using the individual backpacking meals. They are a bit salty but that will prove useful when under stress or during heavy physical activity.

Meals ready to eat (MRE) are okay. Jus remake sure you buy new and not expired cases sold by people at the local gun show.

You can explore a YouTube channel Called steve1989mre. He does a lot of MRE reviews. He shows MRes that have expired are still edible.

Other than that, you may want to consider canned meats and other canned foods as a stockpile for emergency consumption.

After checking ingredients on about a dozen pouches, other than their occasional use of sunflower, canola and palm oils, I find nothing egregious in Mountain House foods.

Certainly nothing which would result in the symptoms you describe. I would ascribe such effects to the impaired health of those complaining when exposed to halfway decent food.

Frankly, Mountain House ingredients are much better than Patriot Supply and is now at the top of my list.

what's wrong with just keeping a large supply of canned food and dried foods in your pantry and perform the due dilligence to keep them rotating

I lived and thrived on little more than minute rice and fresh caught trout and the water they swam in for almost 2 months while backpacking 150 miles in desolate mountains, I didnt need the fancy freeze dried garbage.

Beans rice spinach sweet potatos pickled beets, nuts of all kinds canned chicken and chunk lite tuna will go a long way, Even Oreos and fig bars will last for years.

I dont think I will ever horde freeze dried stuff, it is way over rated.

My truck has an insulated cache of good tasty long storage foods from off the shelf, I make it hard to get to so I forget about it and don't gobble it up in non-emergency mode
