A Kia Soul was launched into the air after hitting a tire that popped off a nearby pickup truck in Chatsworth. Amazingly no one was seriously injured.
Wild video. The police said only minor injuries, but I wonder if his air bag went off?
you picked a fine time to leave me loose wheel
was the driver cited for flying without a license?
Amazing that the driver only suffered minor injuries-
Catastrophic failure of an improperly stressed suspension component. The wheels and tires that come with your truck or other vehicle were chosen by the engineers of those vehicles. Within limits, deviations are OK; push those limits, and you’ll have all kinds of handling issues and component wear.
Elsewhere, someone said it looks like a wheel spacer failed. That pickup truck didn’t leave the factory with that part.
A solid reminder we just don’t know when our last day will be. Could be today driving home from work when a freak accident takes you away.
True that is…
That’s possible, but I have had two occasions where a shop failed to tighten the lug nuts properly. In both cases, after a couple of days, I noticed a strange vibration and I pulled over to investigate.
Now any time someone else removes any of my wheels, as soon as possible, I check the lug nuts to be sure they aren’t loose, or overtightened.
I also had a car in front of me lose the left front wheel. It flew up in the air and came down maybe 10 feet to my left. I was lucky, especially since I was driving a convertible at the time.
Humm. Mr. Mayhem! Burp! (Look out Elon! )
Yep. I remember going to the tire shop which proudly displayed a sign about how they always used a torque wrench on the wheels. When they got ready to run the lugs down with the air impact wrench set at full strength, I said no use the torque wrench or you are going to ruin the drums. (VW) So they just skipped both while I went in to pay. All 4 were rattling when I got home a mile away.
I saw it - the car flipped over and landed upside-down.
If that were me in my Durango, I would have said, “Did a bug just hit my bumper?”
You were there?
Using stop motion, you can see a brief flash from the shiny brake rotor as the wheel tumbles at the end of the clip. It’s hub must have gave up where it bolts on to the suspension. Losing lugnuts wouldn’t kept the rotor with the wheel.
From my trucking years I’ve seen a several failures from this idiot ‘it will be just fine’ mentality.
Ping to 16
Almost certainly the air bag went off and almost certainly the driver was wearing his/her seatbelt. Otherwise, we would’ve seen him/her ejected from the vehicle and he/she would probably be dead.
BTW, I’m opposed to laws requiring you to wear a seatbelt, but I think you’d be a damned fool not to.
Yes, you are correct, but it doesn’t cancel out the advice in my comment. Do NOT trust a grease monkey to bother to properly tighten your lug nuts, and use a torque wrench!
Absolutely. And checking lugnuts is always wise after a shop has had wheels off for tires, brakes, shocks, etc.
