NATIONAL CHEESESTEAK DAY

National Cheesesteak Day on March 24th not only celebrates a fantastic sandwich but it recognizes one of this nation’s greater debates; Who created this deliciousness?

#NationalCheesesteakDay

It’s like March Madness for a cheesesteak. Pat’s and Geno’s square off at 10 AM followed by Chubby’s and Dalessandro’s at 11 AM. Then Jim’s and Tony Luke’s at Noon. Basketball fans know how brackets go. Someone is gonna get a by.

However, the credit is given to a hot dog vendor from the 1930s, Pat Olivieri. According to Philadelphia’s tourism site, Pat’s King of Steaks sits on its original location and is still going strong. This writer has had a cheesesteak from there and would go back in a heartbeat.

The important thing is this fabulous, juicy sandwich on a hoagie roll. The roll is filled with chipped steak, and you can order it with or without cheese and onions. If you’ve never had one, you can really only get an authentic one in Philly. Other places try, so go where you can. But someday, go to Philadephia. It is the real deal.

HOW TO OBSERVE NATIONAL CHEESESTEAK DAY

Invite your friends and head over to your favorite cheesesteak restaurant.

Get it with cheese (it’s cheesesteak day, not steak day) and add the onions, too.

Make your own cheesesteak.

Give a shout-out to the restaurant that makes your favorite cheesesteak.

Use #NationalCheesesteakDay to share on social media.

Good resteraunts Wil, melt cheese for nachos instead of using the whiz. I do like it on pretzels though. On saltine crackers not so much- but it’s OK on Ritz crackers- not great though.

[[I do eat American cheese sometimes melted on an English muffin with a fried egg and ham or bacon. ]]

With Swiss cheese melted is another of my top 10 favorite meals.

When I was there for Navy “A” School in 1968, I had cheesesteak from that little place I talked about...I have had what they call a cheesesteak from many other places (Florida, North Carolina, Tennessee, etc)

NOTHING compares to that first cheesesteak I had in Philly...NOTHING!!!!!!!!!!

*** With Swiss cheese melted is another of my top 10 favorite meals.***

I don’t think we’ve ever tried it with Swiss, but I bet that’s terrific.

Also, I think anything with cheese on it is one of my top 10 favorite meals. Cheese is my weakness. Darn good thing I’m not like several in my family who are lactose intolerant.

I love when a “cheesesteak” chain advertises “Philly style cheesesteaks” and you order one and they ask “What do you want on it?” I already told them provolone and onions. You know, cheesesteak stuff. Did I miss something? He’s waiting for me to add, I don’t know, Russian dressing, pickles, cucumbers, watercress, whipped cream? Sheesh, you’re the expert. Put what goes on a cheesesteak. Far as I know, the choices are provolone or Cheese Whiz.

I know the kind of thing you mean.

My husband’s best friend’s family owned a deli on Long Island. I’m from the South, so a LI deli was something I wanted to experience, at least once in my life. The first time I met his BF, he made me the BEST turkey sub I’ve ever eaten, and ever since then, every turkey sub is compared to that most amazing one I’ve ever had. To this day.

I’ve always done provolone. Never tried Cheese Whiz. I feel like I’d be ruining a sandwich but I could be wrong.

True, but we just always called it cheese whiz- when we said “pick up some cheese whiz” the person shopping would know we meant the stuff in the spray can.

I’ve recently been getting sargentos “aged swiss” slices, and they are great. And yup, anything g topped with cheese makes my list of top foods too. I’ll even eat broccoli IF it has melted cheese on it lol. (Though that certainly does not make it onto my top foods list 😆 )

Lots of people do call it that. We used to call it “squirt cheese”, too. I like the bacon-flavor kind but I haven’t seen it recently.

Jersey Mike’s isn’t bad for being outside Philly. Forget Penn Station. I have no idea what kind of meat they use but it ain’t beef.
