An 85-year Harvard study found the No. 1 thing that makes us happy in life: It helps us ‘live longer’

In 1938, Harvard researchers embarked on a decades-long study to find out: What makes us happy in life?

The researchers gathered health records from 724 participants from all over the world and asked detailed questions about their lives at two-year intervals.

Contrary to what you might think, it's not career achievement, money, exercise, or a healthy diet. The most consistent finding we've learned through 85 years of study is: Positive relationships keep us happier, healthier, and help us live longer. Period.

The No. 1 key to a happy life: 'Social fitness'

Relationships affect us physically. Ever notice the invigoration you feel when you believe someone has really understood you during a good conversation? Or a lack of sleep during a period of romantic strife?

To make sure your relationships are healthy and balanced, it’s important to practice “social fitness.”

We tend to think that once we establish friendships and intimate relationships, they will take care of themselves. But our social life is a living system, and it needs exercise.

Social fitness requires taking stock of our relationships, and being honest with ourselves about where we’re devoting our time and whether we are tending to the connections that help us thrive.

I find even watching animals relaxing. The last few nights I gave up on Netflix, Prime and cable and watched different nature programs. Very relaxing.

The photography is really good now. As a disclaimer, they all do try to get you to feel guilty about climate change however.

I wish someone would do a statistical study of the average longevity of Conservatives versus longevity of liberals. I have no doubt that conservatives outlive liberals by a significantly wide margin, but it would be nice if data analysis were to prove it conclusively.

On the other hand - people are individuals. Each person is unique.
Generalizations are possible, but everyone is different from everyone else in some way/s.
This is why a one-size-fits-all approach does not work all the time.
Not in medicine; Not in education; Not in child-raising.

“ It’s been said that married men live longer than single men.”

Only married men in happy marriages which is a minority of marriages. Most marriages turn toxic over time.

Anything about nature is interesting and can be relaxing.

As for climate change guilt, maybe I’ll listen to it if someone can show me how people on Earth can influence the sun and how it works.

Hence, the lockdowns -- an important part of destroying the health of much of the population, just not the ones who were enabled to riot.

“As Rush used to state, liberals wake up every day angry. They surround themselves with other angry people. They are also very negative. The good fortune to have been born in the greatest country ever is actually a main point of challenge and controversy.”

One of the reasons getting to 80+ besides a good wife and DNA was eliminating the toxic B$ that came into our home via left wing newspapers and fake news on TV was not healthy.

I started listening to The Rush Limbaugh Show. The first time I heard Rush was on KGO in San Francisco. It was 1988. He was followed on air/KGO by good local conservative radio hosts.

My wife never liked the gloom and doom on local and national
news so we just stopped tuning in. I summarized what Rush said that day, and that was enough for her.

I cancelled local and the Gay SF Chronical fishwraps posing as news papers.

We pulled the plug on National Fox Tv, when MeAgain tried to eliminate Trump in the first primary.

I started eliminating liberals from our daily lives a couple of decades ago.

Just the other day I was in the grocery store and a father was shopping with his 2 kids, maybe 3 and 5, they each had a basket for groceries and running around. He said sorry for the kids running around and I said they’re having fun! No need to say sorry as I had a few kids many years ago. I think its great that they are out learning. I have 1 grand kid so far.

We only have 1 grandchild so far also.

I loved being a mom, and spending time with my children when they were little. It’s important for kids to experience things like going grocery shopping, and eating dinner out politely. I’m glad you put that father at ease. Children need to be children and not just little adults. That’s where my MIL got it wrong.

I have developed the practice of pointing out the positive aspects of almost any situation.

My personal guide: Stay out of Loserville.

There are people who live in Loserville, and when they have a chance to move out, they UNERRINGLY make the choice that takes them right back into Loserville.

Observe the Losers that you know [from afar, hopefully].

It's like their superpower.

I like being around positive people just not too positive.
If too positive they think everything is “Swell”.
Then one day they ‘snap!’
