DARPA has fully developed their Gyro-Magnetic Propulsion System and is ready to deploy armed test “drones” under hush-hush conditions.
General public reveals are at least another generation out.
Their problem is that they have several smaller unarmed vehicles, that were developed as proof-of-concept, that are no longer needed and present a security issue; they could fall into the wrong hands and be subject to reverse-engineering.
Resolution?
Fly them and have them shot down as unidentified.
Did the Chinee balloon precipitate this plan?
This thought was fully triggered by the description of one of these vehicles as “octagon shaped”; easily enclosing a large-ish gyroscope.
My fevered brain says that the propulsion system is being developed for “space travel” and may start out being introduced via the Space Force.
No Dilithium crystals were harmed in the creation of this scenario.

This needs to be explained. Does China possess a new system of flight? Do they have cloaking technology? Is this actually our own technology that China has pirated away? If this was actually extraterrestrial alien technology, did we precipitate a confrontation that will lead to difficult hostilities?

Having been involved in equivalent situations (all in a days work), the taste and burning sensations (mouth/sinuses) throughout the area must ne horrendous.
Butyl acrylate is really nasty stuff to be exposed to.
Composed PVC will decompose into VC and some oily smoke that coats the breathing area, taste terrible and carries Hydrochloric Acid in the decomposition products.
Because of the acid content, full-face fitted masks are required to enter the hot zone.
Which is likely measured in miles from the look of that plume.
