Julian Sands, a British actor who has appeared in dozens of films and TV shows since the 1980s, is one of two missing hikers currently being searched for in Southern California's mountains, authorities confirmed Wednesday.
Sands has been missing since last week in the Mt. Baldy area. Family reported him missing on Friday evening.
According to the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department, severe weather on the mountain has been difficult and air resources have been limited.
"His wife did report him missing," said Gloria Huerta with SBCSD. "From what I understand, he left sometime that day for a hike and when he did not return, his family reported him missing."
Sands is known for roles in several films, including the 1985 feature "A Room with a View," "Warlock" and "Leaving Las Vegas."
Born in England, the 65-year-old now lives in the North Hollywood area.
Meanwhile, a separate search is ongoing for another hiker in Los Angeles County.
Bob Gregory, of Hawthorne, was reported missing by family on Monday afternoon. According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's San Dimas station, they've been searching for him in the Crystal Lake area of the San Gabriel Mountains.
Family says they are distraught and fear he may have hurt himself and fallen. They added the police are tracing his cell phone.
Search teams combed the area on the ground and from the air on Tuesday. However, those efforts were limited Wednesday to air crews only due to icy conditions on the tough terrain, authorities said.
"The conditions are too dangerous. In fact, even some of the more experienced hikers are getting themselves into trouble up there so we recommend that people to stay away from that area," said Huerta.
These days anything goes. Men identify as women, women as men, girls as cats... if Julian wants to identify as a missing hiker, all power to him/her.
LOL ....ya beat me to it:)
I used to hike and backpack all over the mountains around L.A.: Baldy; Angeles Crest; Santa Monica Mountains; San Gabriel Mountains; San Bernardino Mountains; et als. That was many, many years ago (1960s).
It’s freezing up there.
I’ve hiked the Pacific Crest Trail in this area... it cannot be emphasized enough- these are the big mountains. Winter is absolutely no joke and carrying an ice axe in your hands, and wearing crampons on the soles of your footwear is essential. Knowing how to use an ice axe is especially important. Anything else is folly.
“It’s freezing up there.”
I expect it is. January and February in the mountains there can be like that.
He has a lot of acting credits (159):
The most fell beast you can meet in the mountains ain’t a puma, or a wolf or bear, heck, it ain’t even a bigfoot...
As Charlton Heston said, “It’s people!”
The human animal is by far the most dangerous.
With the weather on the West Coast the last couple of weeks, a big WTH was he thinking is in order. Hope people don’t die looking for him!
You are correct and even with all the right equipment and ability things can go bad and the mountains don’t care whether you live or die.
been raining and snowing as late as last bight doesn’t look good. BTW I think this guy is a good actor.
Sutton Ross from The Blacklist. He’s the one who told Liz the bag of bones was, in fact, Raymond Reddington and that the Red she knows, is an imposter. Also introduced Liz to her sister. Ray shot him.
I agree. I’ve seen a few of his films and he did good work. Hope he’s ok.
Said a prayer for him but I wish people would not go hiking on mountains. I know that will never stop but honestly, lose your life for a hike.
Using the buddy system is not a foreign concept either...
Come on people, make it a point to get back down off the mountain, and return to your loved ones at the end of the day.
Bad place to ski if you didn't know what you doing.
I was always surprised he didn't have a bigger career. Maybe "Boxing Helena" did him in.
Slide ... an eagle incubating it’s eggs during yesterday’s snow storm in the Southern California Mountains. She moves around after the 2:00 minute point:
I was appalled when Tom Cruise was cast as Lestat in Interview with a Vampire. At the time I thought Sands would have been perfect for that role as well and should have been a shoe in.
Hope he is found alive and well.
