I tested my ice axe as a brake on the north side of the ridge trail to Mt Baldy one winter hike. I only went about 10' down that treacherous incline, so didn't gain much speed, but everything seemed fine as far as stopping. I didn't want to drop any further.

The next time was on Mt. Shasta, taking a shortcut "glissade" down a chute while descending from the top, about 500 yards of sliding down the early July snow pack. Holy cr p, that took every bit of strength (especially grip) to avoid losing the axe and ending up a statistic as a human rag doll.

.... I live just a couple miles from the southern base of Mt Baldy .... it has been getting frosty here at night Temps slightly above freezing by sunrise.

.... The summit is expecting Temps in the low teens around 13 degrees. If ur not prepared for the weather not to mention the rugged conditions .... You simply won't make it. Also being 65 ... it doesnt improve his chances ..... Prayers up for Mr Sands and his hiking partner.

Mr. GG2 grew up hiking and camping in those mountains as a kid. His Dad was LA county Sheriff’s deputy foothills division. In his teens Mr. GG2 was called in to track for them a few times. He says its really rugged.

According to IMdB, Sands starred in the 2021 movie "The Survivalist," so he should be okay.
