As a fat person, I hate the first few weeks of January with a fiery passion.
Following every holiday season, there’s seemingly no escape from the weight loss industrial complex. Social media is inundated with weight loss ads, people are constantly posting fitness goals, and gyms are in your face talking about “beach bods.” The entire world embraces the disordered eating I worked so hard to escape while gleefully saying, “Your body shouldn’t exist.” To be honest, the world does a good job of that year-round but really cranks it up a notch this time of year.

At least Kate Berik isn’t trying to convince people that her body type is attractive, healthy and something to aspire to.
Wow. Hang in there.
My point was not to brag, but to establish my bone fides as a fat person. :)
And cost the rest of us in higher insurance premiums to cover the expense of their inevitable medical care.
“She lives in Brooklyn with her cat Baxter and can be found sharing opinions and animal photos on Twitter and Instagram.”
Is she saying pushing healthy diets and exercise with the goal of losing excess body fat is disordered eating?
If so, then to hell with her.
“...creating a PLUS-SIZED space for plus-size workers to feel welcome...”
I love stories like this. As hard as it is, it can be done and you are the proof. Congrats!
Maybe companies should not do these stupid distracting things and just treat their employees like adults.
Care to share how you’re doing it?
I’d like to know myself.
So if someone loses their weight, and stops being fat….they lose their privileges?
That’s the great thing about race/ethnicity privilege - you can’t really change that.
Well, then again, that’s the great thing about modern mental illness - you can “identify” as anything and now you’re in the club.
I recommend fat people lose weight, then declare themselves fat when thin, and avoid losing that privilege.
(Insane world.)
Remember they accidentally did that at first, then realized the faux pas - so now it’s DEI.
Bastards.
When I see “DEI” I think of something else.
**Your joints will fail.**
My wife and I attended my high school grad 50th annie reunion last summer. Small town IL school. 54 grads. 17, out of a possible 36, turned out for the event. Probably 10-12 obese.
The stories of replaced knees and joints was common to hear. Sad.
Thankful for a working life (and a slim wife that cooks sensibly) that has kept my weight below 200 lbs (180 now. I’m 6’1”).
When I became an OTR truck driver at age 47, I found out real fast that I was going to gain weight taking in the same calories as before. Nipped in the bud just before reaching 200. One evening my athletic 17 yr old son commented, “Dad, you’re getting a spare tire there.”
That triggered an exercise routine that eventually had me by age 54 running the 100 faster than when I was in school (although I was distance runner), and once again able to grab the basketball rim.
Abusing the body beyond normal work and play is simply not wise. I rode a bull in a rodeo at age 19. Once was enough to confirm my dad’s admonishment: bull riding has nothing to do with ranching or horsemanship. It’s just gladiator stuff”.
A classmate of my sister has been limping for the last 40 yrs because he rode bulls.
People, please take care of your bodies!
creating a space??? you mean like creating MORE space...
Once, in my trucking travels, I was tying down a load on the flatbed at a John Deere plant. A heavy driver near me was doing the same. I commented how the specialized hauling can be a real workout. He told me he switched from reefer (refrigerated van) to stepdeck almost 5 months before. Said he was under 300 as of about 2 weeks back, and said his high had been about 370. His goal was to get down to 250, but was confident he was going to reach less than that in a matter of months.
He said he also eliminated anything deep fried, and that his determination affected his wife. He would be gone a week or two at a time, come home and they would cheerfully compare their weight losses.
I was working on just eating smaller portions with mixed success. Then I had more issues with high blood sugar that could not be explained and the medications I was on did not stop. Putting me on Mounjaro to help with the blood sugar has helped with the appetite control as well. I understand it is scarce now because people are using it just for weight loss. I need to lose a bit more so I can start swimming so I can lose more.
Be sure to get your thyroid levels checked every few months as you lose weight aggressively, to avoid inducing hyperthyroidism and a strain on your heart. I ignored that step and lived (but barely, for months) to regret it.
Plus, keep your gut healthy with probiotics.
