Why are antennas popping up all over the foothills? Salt Lake City seeks to solve mystery

On Wednesday, Salt Lake City public lands officials hiked for hours up a snowy trail to remove a mysterious device – one that’s popping up all over the foothills.

It consists of a locked battery box, a solar panel, and an antenna, according to Tyler Fonarow, the city’s recreational trails manager.

“These towers have been bolted into different peaks and summits and ridges around the foothills,” Fonarow explained, “and it started with one or two, and now it might be as much as a dozen.”

The first ones appeared about a year ago, but Fonarow said many more were found in the past few months. The small towers don’t have permits, and it’s unclear who’s installing them.

Some group is obviously secretly communicating with aliens.

In the picture in your post 39, look at the top of that hill in the far distance. Looks like another tower.

“We don’t care how you do it up North.” /s

Something said many times in the South when Yankees move down and try to tell them how things should be done.

“Free solar panels. Short hike up hill required.”

The antenna frequency is in the 900 - 930mhz range based on the pictures..

Possibilities:

Your suggestion of a use for the devices as a mesh network of sorts seems plausible. However, HAMs as a general group are pretty obsessive about working within the boundaries of the law with respect to frequencies, power and other relevant tech items. If it were a HAM related mesh, it seems to me that this would be some sort of cooperative effort with a government entity.

For example…. The California forests have been very prone to destructive forest fires in recent years. I can see a high utility use for fire fighters to have mesh networks to supplement their conventional communications where there are blind spots because of topography.

I have a problem with the idea that the function and sources of the so called mysterious devices is not known. This information may not be known to the reporter and his sources. However, there are civilian and government geeks that can determine the technical functions of the devices very easily. With more time, forensics into the electronics and programming can peal back the layers to expose the who and why in detail.

My opinions…

The easy way to find out is to put a couple of .223’s into a couple of them, and see who shows up at your doorstep a couple of days later.

Hell, why not grab the whole rig if you could?

Finders keepers and all that.

That was my thinking...preppers doing it. Thinking they wouldn’t get caught or thinking it was innocuous enough to be of any real concern.

Sounds like they thought wrong.
