Weekly Garden Thread - January 7-13, 2023 [Garden Trends for 2023 Edition]
January 7, 2023 | Diana in WI/Greeneyes in Memoriam

Posted on 01/07/2023 7:06:22 AM PST by Diana in Wisconsin

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.

This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.

NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!

I've been plowing new ground here in South Alabama.

Here's a picture of my "new" (it's old, but I just put it all together) plow rig:

Not much going on growing wise here in NH.

Our outdoor work has been relegated to snow removal when it snows, and cutting up some of the tress that a storm in Dec provided us with some firewood for next year from.

I’m outside of Auburn, Alabama. Piedmont for sure, but maybe a tad South climate wise.

I’m currently preparing my garden beds. In a few weeks, say end of third week of January, I’ll plant Irish potatoes, Jerusalem artichokes, and walking onions. First week of February, I plant spinach, lettuce, and carrots seeds outside.

By third week of February, I transplant out cabbage and kale seedlings.

I’ve had frost on all the above only a few times, without problems. Irish potatoes, if they’ve sprouted early, and there’s a frost, will just die back and resprout without problems.

Often the hardest season for gardening here is hot, humid midsummer, not winter.

Good luck!

I’ve used cardboard as well, and putting a good layer of wood chips on it helps, too.

I have used landscape fabric in the past, but weeds can still grow through it. Cardboard seems to smother better and composts nicely after a year or so.

I haven’t seen it in the news yet, but given the way egg prices are going, I expect another run on day-old chicks this spring.

And the quail-raising and meat rabbit discussion groups I’m on are both getting a steady stream of new members, trying to find a way around high meat prices.

I’ve done it that way. Look for the thickest, strongest weed-barrier fabric you can find. Don’t fall for the thin stuff just because it’s cheap, it’ll start deteriorating before you even get it down. I’ve even used carpeting as a weed barrier, and it had weeds coming through by the second year.

If the weeds are well-established, lay some cardboard down first. The broken stems of an established weed can poke right through your fabric.

Try and give the fabric as much time as you can manage between laying it down, and cutting through to plant it. Fabric breathes well enough that it takes a while for the weeds underneath it to die.

Lastly, have something you can put around the plants after you get them in the ground. The hole you need to cut in order to plant through is going to be big enough it’ll take a bit for the plant to fill it in. In the mean time, you’ll have weeds fighting to grow in the gap between the plant and the fabric. One trick is to take any extra fabric and cut it into pieces at least 1 foot wide, then wrap one around your new plant like a scarf. Make sure you pin it down on at least 3 sides, otherwise the wind will use it to pull your plant over.

Good Morning Diana! Isn’t it great to have sunshine today!
That was too many cloudy days in a row for me.

I want to seed a few early pansies. Might still be too early. Don’t want them to get leggy. Will probably wait until February first.

Will start heating the greenhouse in early April. Until then, any seed germinating will be in my Park Seed BioDome in my sunroom.

Was looking though the Jung Seed catalog this week. Tempted to order raspberries.

What does everyone think of these varieties, or please offer up your favorites:

Nova
Killarney
Latham

😊

I found out that my 6 yo great-niece is hatching baby chicks as a “project”! They have a bunch of laying hens - haven’t seen the rooster, but I’ve heard him on videos. In the hospital, dad started talking about “baby chicks” & said he wanted some. Hmmm ... if he & I gang up on mom, I might end up with some hens yet!

I’m looking, and I can’t find a single ‘trend’ on growing your own food.

It's not you. I've been on the web a LOT since the 90s and I've never seen such useless search results. The Information Age has turned into the Propaganda Age.

Welcome to the Machine

My take? We’re just shutting up about it and going about our own business these days. We KNOW what a mess we’re in and what lies ahead of us in the coming years. :(

I used to frequent a Christian based survivalist web forum and about the time the Tea Party got co-opted, a bunch of members seemingly disappeared. Everyone pretty much agreed that they went grayman. That is, checked out of web interaction, quit talking politics, laying low, blending in and prepping.
