While electric vehicles may seem to be all the rage in the automotive space, Toyota Motor Corporation president Akio Toyoda is pumping the brakes on the idea of an all-in approach.
"People involved in the auto industry are largely a silent majority," Toyoda told reporters during a trip to Thailand, according to the Wall Street Journal. "That silent majority is wondering whether EVs are really OK to have as a single option. But they think it's the trend so they can't speak out loudly."
"Because the right answer is still unclear, we shouldn't limit ourselves to just one option," he said, according to the outlet — during the past few years, he said, he has attempted to communicate this idea to stakeholders in the automotive space, including government figures, but he indicated that his effort had been tiring at points.
"Is there interest in electric vehicles? Yes. Is it more than 10% to 15% of our customer base? No way," said Ryan Gremore, a dealer based in Illinois who owns a number of brand franchises, according to the outlet.
According to the Journal, Toyoda said that other options like hydrogen-powered vehicles were starting to receive a better reception from government leaders, media figures, and people in the vehicle industry.
The left has been fanatically pushing electric vehicles as it peddles climate change alarmism.
But electric vehicles remain impractical in many cases — for instance, they require significant time to recharge, which could be an inconvenience when recharging in the middle of a long trip. They are also less affordable to purchase than traditional gas-powered vehicles.
Heretic! Burn the witch!
Plus parking garages will collapse if they are filled with EVs.
Contradicting Biden and Bootieplug?
Burn him at the stake!
A CEO with a modicum of common sense???? Unheard of in this day and age.
Toyota’s one of the few rational players in the auto industry. They’re going to clean up over the next few years as the overwhelming majority of Americans reject BEVs.
I wholeheartedly agree except I don't think we're silent -- just ignored.
And this post was typed by someone who's glad we own an EV and use it for most of our driving. We would never have even thought of getting an EV except that my wife and I need 2 cars anyway and keep an ICE pickup handy for the times an EV won't cut it.
I know, right? The fact he's smart, says EV's aren't the future and that Toyota builds the most reliable brand in the world is the reason I bought my 2023 Toyota Tacoma TRD OffRoad.
It's a FANTASTIC vehicle!
“Silent” my a$$.
We’re just being legislated to insignificance by tyrants.
This is why Toyota is the best auto manufacturer. Their leadership actually has some wisdom and isn’t just trying to placate greenies and leftist politicians.
It should be obvious that all-electric is practical for a limited subset of drivers, but almost all the big car makers are chasing them like they are the only option for the future. It isn’t like Toyota isn’t interested in the eco market, they jumped to the lead in hybrids early on. I think that once the fad in all-electric cars fades in the next few years, Toyota will be seen as a leader for going its own way.
I’m a big believer in EVs, but that means I think they could reasonably become 70% of all vehicles. (Delivery trucks, urban commuters, show cars)
But EVs replacing 100% of vehicles is impossible.
I'm not talking just of generating capacity, but power distribution systems as well.
To that end: I would like to see widely distributed power generation, by a multitude of methods. Nuclear (fission). SMRs in every neighborhood. Geothermal. Hydro. Plus the occasional windmill and solar panel.
People may be waking up. The co2 number does NOT matter. Our climate has been what it should be since the beginning of time. It does change...but not because of us. It’s a God thing.
Only 15% interest, but whole car corps are dumping classical ICE in the next years.
Of course, that could be because of the tyrants forcing the change.
I will state it again: technological progress CANNOT be legislated.
No matter what these fools think.
No, he is talking about people IN the industry, not overall populations.
With this weeks cold snap EV owners are about to get a real lesson in what does and does not work.
EV is a Dead-End
Again, it’s NOT the populace. He’s talking about car business insiders.
Used cars will become valuable until California bans them. No ICE vehicles will get registrations.
Ford is too.......................
