This is the moment that a heroic German shepherd rushed to protect its young owner after a neighbor's dog got loose and charged at the youngster.

The six-year-old boy was playing on his front lawn with his dog, Tank, at his South Florida home when the hound suddenly made a frightening beeline for him on November 8.

According to the boy's father, the neighbor's dog started charging toward his son.

The family pet, Tank, a one-year-old German shepherd, sensed the boy was in danger and swiftly jumped into action to protect his best friend.

Tank's guarding instinct kicked into overdrive as he pushed the boy out of harm's way and then stood over him before confronting the other canine.

In the shocking clip, the tearful little boy can be seen running towards his mother as his dad rushed onto the scene to break up the doggie scuffle.

After both of the dogs bark, growl and charge at one another, the neighbor's dog finally ran home.

One of many reasons I don’t walk, hike or work in my front yard without my large, protective dog close by.

Too many idiots let their dogs out - I think on purpose, even though it is highly illegal here - to run around the neighborhood. It is infuriating.

The interesting thing to me is that the dog spun around and turned his back on the attacker to check on the boy as the boy was fleeing.

I had a Chow which are supposed to be one man dogs and care only about that one person. She was a puppy when I shared a house with a buddy who had two toddlers. Several years later, he visited me and my neighbor’s dog got in his now 9/10 year old boys’ faces bearing her teeth and growling. My Chow shot across the yard and kicked my neighbor’s dog’s ass. She remembered those kids even though it had been several years since she’d seen them.

then after the attack the dog stands by them guarding and looking back and forth

the video amazes me. the dog is only 1 year old and probably not a trained dog like a police dog

meanwhile the pit bull is off who knows where..

Pits are smart. I was once set upon by a pack of seven dogs. The ankle biters and standard poodles rushed in. The two pits held back. And, as in this case, the kid((me) wasn’t what they were after. It was my dog. The Shepard ( Malinois?) in this vid stops at its property line. Good dog.

When I was a kid, we had a boxer that was very protective of me and my sibs. Wouldn’t let another adult, other than my parents, in our backyard when we were outside.

On time I did something dumb and my Dad spanked me. As he was walking out of the room our boxer jumped up and bit him on the butt. That made my Dad love that dog even more!!

Dogs, in general, are ‘pack’ animals. They recognize their own ‘pack’ as this boy is part of his pack, but the strange dog is not, so danger!.................

I adopted a mixed breed that somebody tossed out at the end of my driveway. She has a chip from the shelter, so I adopted her through them. They said she’s a Lab mix. I did a DNA test on her and she’s 33% Redbone Coonhound with some Shepard and Chow mixed in. She loves my two Mountain Feists and has become their fierce protector. She is extremely sweet and loves people but don’t act like you are going to hurt her “new” sisters.

The smartest dog I ever had was a mix CHOW-Bird Dog-Shepherd. He could understand lots of words and commands. He had several toys and if you told him to fetch a particular one, football, baseball, tennis ball he would get that one.

If you said “Want to go for a walk?” he would rush and get his leash and be ready to go!................

I have a German Shepherd that is about five years old. After our older dog died this past January, we got a dalmatian pup to keep her company. The dalmatian loves to bite my ankles and jump all over me outside, thinking that I’m playing with her just like the shepherd does. The Shepherd almost always attacks the Dalmatian, with some great sound effects, in order to “protect” me. They are GREAT dogs.

This one is extremely protective, but sweet. I can’t in my wildest imagination figure out why she ended up being put out on the road. She is perfect in all ways. She’s 100% house trained, knows commands, and has the best and sweetest nature I have ever seen. I don’t know what’s wrong with people sometimes.

Right now the only thing wrong is that she’s blowing the Chow undercoat before cold weather so she can grow another one. She’s keeping my Swiffer busy. :-) Even daily brushing isn’t slowing the shed.
