A first sergeant at Fort Hood, Texas, is making soldiers take the stairs after banning the use of elevators in the morning in a bid to keep the troops fit.

"In order to promote physical training and fitness, the elevator will not be used before 0900 Monday through Friday," First Sgt. Avery Peoples said in a memo reviewed by Military.com dated Oct. 26. "This policy applies to personnel assigned to Dragon Troop and visitors."

When reached by Military.com, Peoples only replied, "Don't call me again," and hung up.

Never had any elevators at any base I was ever at.
Stairs are good exercise.

Sounds like they ought to ban it Mon-Fri! Too many fat people in the military.

Running stairs is good exercise.

Helps with coordination.

The stairs are also faster.

It’s a lawful order with a valid military purpose.

I was an ALO at Ft Hood decades ago. Our building had no elevator. Like you, I can’t remember many that did. Hospitals, maybe. And I was Air Force, where we paid lip service to physical fitness! I do remember mandatory running at Ft Hood...wonder if they still do that!

Hard for the men wearing skirts and high heels, though.

Selling Monster, Red Bull, Full Throttle, and a multitude of other sugar laden drinks at the class six doesn’t help much either.

Good for him. Making those fatso moonpigs walk upstairs. Well within his rights and responsibility zone.

Or too many fat troops late to formation because the elevator was full.

Also, I rather like that First Sergeant’s reply to the phone call from the press.

Probably the handicap access laws have triggered elevators in all installations now.

Not saying its a good law, but with our woke military, no surprise.

Whether you are fit or fat, riding the elevator makes little difference in moving you from one end of the spectrum to the other.

The barracks at Fort Riley didn’t have elevators. I walked up and down the stairs everyday without thinking about an elevator.

“Never had any elevators at any base I was ever at.”

Paternoster/continuous lift systems were in use in the former IG Farben building in Frankfurt, Germany which Eisenhower had preserved from bombing in WW2 to become SACEUR HQ in the post-war period. The building later became HQ, V Corps during the Cold War when I had occasion to go to the building twice in the early 80s. Also featured in the movies “Berlin Express” and “Night People”.

When I was 24, I started up a bituminous coal fired boiler in the high desert in Arizona at 5,000 feet elevation. The unit was 20 stories high and the constructor banned the construction crews from using the elevator. Elevators in such plants are small and slow. On other job sites, I’d see guys waiting for an HOUR to get the elevator up a few floors.

I used to run up those 20 flights of stairs five to ten times a day to work on things and get exercise. My legs were never stronger than during that six months I spent on that job site. A few years back I worked in an office on the fifth floor and I still refused to use the elevator. I trotted up those flights usually two or three times a day. It was a bit harder at age 63 than 24. But stairs are a great way to keep in shape.

The elevators on all my ships were for aircraft, ordinance or supplies. These snowflakes would have been REALLY offended when E-6 and below had to climb up and down multiple ladders to go around “Officer Country”.
