I have tried everything possible but we have come to the end of the road for trying to save his leg. It has to come off. So, he will be having his right leg amputated by Skylos Sports Medicine in Frederick MD Monday.

“We have no pets, no one else to fret over or take care of but each other. “

Very different when you’re alone.

Dogs are amazing creatures. They persevere in times when I believe the heartiest human would fail. Your pup is going to be so much better, and you should feel truly blessed that you are able to help him. He will pay that back to you for the rest of his life. Dogs are a gift from God.

Sad to hear this, but do what is best for the pup.
You have gone through so much in the last decade with your pups. We all know you will do what is best, hang in there.

So sad. But you will be with him, and pets sense that your love will get them through. Many prayers for a new beginning and a new life for this family member.

Prayers for you and your dog.

My beloved tuxedo cat had to have a leg amputated four years ago. He’s large and in charge and has no idea he’s handicapped. Animals are tough, resilient and adaptable. You have every reason to be optimistic. Best wishes to you both.

Tuesday is the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi. Find a priest/church near you that will do a blessing of the animals.

Prayers up for Hrafi and you, for successful surgery, and for peace of mind and strength to recover and help each other through the difficulties.

I hope you can take some comfort in my observation that I have never seen a three legged dog that appeared to have any less zest for life than any four legged one.

They appear to adapt much better than humans do (though I expect we would adapt better if we went around on all fours instead of two legs)

If the surgery goes okay, your pup will be fine, FRiend. You will need to mentally keep pace with your dog, because it will forget it only has three legs before you do!

Best wishes-

Exactly. See my post above. Dog don’t seem to be saddled with the mental handicap the humans do when we lose a limb and have to overcome it.

It is my belief it doesn’t even enter into their mental calculations. They don’t seem to mourn that missing limb as much as they seem to relish the fact that they can run to the dog dish on three remaining ones.

I will pray for you and for Hrafi. The love for, and from, a pet is one of the most powerful emotions.

Your post has triggered old memories and I’m crying now for the pets we’ve lost. Animals’ true innocence is what tugs at the heart strings. (I still haven’t cried after the deaths of my father and brother. They weren’t innocents. Far from it.)

I adopted a three=legged dog many years ago. He had no problem getting around and became a favorite for his spirit living life his own way. A valued member of a small pack. He was happy. Don’t despair for your dog.
