Drinking two to three cups of coffee a day is linked with a longer lifespan and lower risk of cardiovascular disease compared with avoiding coffee. The findings applied to ground, instant and decaffeinated varieties.
"In this large observational study, ground, instant and decaffeinated coffee were associated with equivalent reductions in the incidence of cardiovascular disease and death from cardiovascular disease or any cause," said Professor Peter Kistler.
Coffee drinkers were compared to non-drinkers for the incidence of arrhythmias, cardiovascular disease and death, after adjusting for age, sex, ethnicity, obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, obstructive sleep apnea, smoking status, and tea and alcohol consumption. The median follow up was 12.5 years.
All types of coffee were linked with a reduction in death from any cause. The greatest risk reduction seen with two to three cups per day, which compared to no coffee drinking was associated with a 14%, 27% and 11% lower likelihood of death for decaffeinated, ground, and instant preparations, respectively.
All coffee subtypes were associated with a reduction in incident cardiovascular disease. Again, the lowest risk was observed with two to three cups a day, which compared to abstinence from coffee was associated with a 6%, 20%, and 9% reduced likelihood of cardiovascular disease for decaffeinated, ground, instant coffee, respectively.
Ground and instant coffee, but not decaffeinated, were associated with a reduction in arrhythmias including atrial fibrillation. Compared with non-drinkers, the lowest risks were observed with four to five cups a day for ground coffee and two to three cups a day for instant coffee, with 17% and 12% reduced risks, respectively.
Professor Kistler said, "It is likely that the non-caffeinated compounds were responsible for the positive relationships observed. Our findings indicate that drinking modest amounts of coffee of all types can be enjoyed as a heart healthy behavior."

Too tired to grind my own beans. Coffee filters no. I use the built in screen. Some people have to have the best. Waste of time. I just drink it and wait for the bowels to move.
A happy post! Thanks!
French vailla and hazelnut. Good stuff.
Folgers Instant, baby. That’s where it’s at.
I find coffee does just that to me in the morning, virtually all the time.
Tea wasn’t that reliable, but I prefer various teas.
How big a cup they were talking about? A stupid article to leave that out.
Ethiopian Sidamo one day and Guatemala Coban the next are life-giving!
Yum! My wife and I have a similar tea and it’s nice in the Fall, as I know you realize.
I hope you have time to enjoy such finer things in life. Surely, it will help keep you warm when you turn down your thermostats this winter, there in Germany.
Guatemalan coffees are wonderful.
I sincerely hope each of us can improve and extend our lives, to better glorify God.
AMEN!
No way would my body allow me to drink that much coffee.
My dad’s been drinking 8 cups of coffee per day and he’s in his 70’s. I’ve been drinking coffee since I was 11.
BLACK. Not this fag homo weak-ass mammpy pamby, sugar and milk nonsense.
Personally I am never the one to turn up the thermostat here. I like it chilly and received refunds of thousands of euros over the years that was taken out with the rent based on projected usage.
(Right now I am sitting in my underwear with the window open and the heat off.)
Home roast!
They said cups. A cup of ANY liquid is 8 oz. So 16-24 fluid ounces. Or 2-3 cups.
