About those EV home charging systems...
self ^ | Sept. 21, 2022 | self

I've been musing re home EV charging. I have no expertise beyond common sense but there will surely be practical considerations involved...

Let's say we have a surburban family with mom, pop & children all driving EVs. How many can be charged at once? I am thinking a multi-EV charging system and the necessary electrical capacity to safely power it would both need to be heavy-duty and therefore quite expensive. ka-ching and then you get to pay the electric bill!

If this home only has a minimum power charging system requiring hours to charge a single vehicle, there would be EVs on that charger constantly - and squabbles about "I'M next!" Btw, the insurance companies will note these systems and surely raise their rates accordingly.

Scenario 2: Same residential home but Mom & Pop are travelling for a week. I can envision Junior or Miss Cutie Pie telling their friends "Sure, come on over! My parents are gone for the week, you can use our charger all you want." More ka-ching on the power bill.

On a concurrent note, I've read speculative posts on how once a residential neighborhood reaches sufficient EV saturation, the electrical distribution serving them will necessarily need to be strengthened to handle all the extra required capacity. Someone must pay up for these modifications.

Powering EVs will require seminal changes in what we are accustomed to. Remote commercial charging stations will necessarily occupy our valuable time for much longer than gassing up a car. And, at least in the near term, there will be far fewer of them than we have now in our corner gas stations.

Very few homes today have home gas pumps. In the future many/most will have a charging station bringing about their own conveniences - but also their own hassles.

Our neighbor has one. It cost $6,500 to purchase and install the 220 volt type for her Tesla.

All good questions.
Right now, we’re in kind of an early adopter phase.
But physics is a harsh master.

When your neighbor needs service on that tesla I’ll give you one guess where it HAS TO go.

That’s a lot of capital to amortize.
I wonder if it will bring any added pricing when the house is sold?

If you get one, make sure you charge it OUTDOORS......some have caught fire recently, you don’t want your house burning down with your vehicle.

2-3 days! Even 18 hours is incredibly long.

Owning a plug in electric car is like owning an ICE car with a gas tank that perpetually shrinks. Yet it takes the same amount of time to fill it up.

I won’t be buying an EV. I purchased a low-mileage 2019 ICE vehicle and I drive minimal miles/year. It should last me for the duration unless I live a lot longer.

To add a 220v circuit should not cost that much. A 40amp 220v curcuit would require 8/2 awg wire which is around $2/ft. The 40a breakers would be about $20/per( 2 needed ).

I am still not sure why this is so much $$$$$$$$$?

If 25% of the auto fleet were electric and even if there were enough generating capacity to accommodate all the necessary recharging ( and there isn’t), the transmission distribution systems could not handle all the charging especially if it were done in the evening. The fireworks display would be the transistors on the top of those poles exploding as the system tries to accommodate the prolonged high voltage flow. Those transistors feature the very best of 1940s and 1950s technology.

Yes, I imagine it’s like my Android S20. The battery is long lasting at first but now I must charge rather frequently.

How many amps?

30 amp 220v will charge a model Y at 25 miles per hour.

Which is like filling a car with gas at one gallon per hour.
