California’s Legislature passed a bill Monday to create a government panel that would set wages for an estimated half-million fast food workers in the state, a first-in-the-U.S. approach to workplace regulation that labor union backers hope will spread nationally.
The bill, known as the Fast Act, would establish a panel with members appointed by the governor and legislative leaders composed of workers, union representatives, employers and business advocates. They would set hourly wages of up to $22 for fast food workers starting next year and can increase them annually by the same rate as the consumer-price index, up to a maximum of 3.5%.

Prediction 6: There are too many people in the world. Population control. Soylent Green.
The next step after setting wages, is setting prices.
The process is known as wage and price controls.
After it spreads beyond the fast food industry, California is doomed
Your fast food experience in California will now involve only kiosks and robots.
Yeah...I was playing off of Slow Joe’s comment about MAGA.
“The bill, known as the Fast Act...would set hourly wages of up to $22 for fast food workers starting next year...”
Fast food establishments in my town have signs offering ‘up to $22.00 per hour right now.
Arby’s is only ope from 11:30 AM to 5:00 PM — similar hours for Burger King.
Had Double Whopper with cheese and a medium fry last week (had my own water) it was $12.75.
ALL shifts at Target and Walmart begin at $19.00 per hour with overnight stockers earning $22.00 per hour.
Why mandate?
I am working very part time in a major retailer right now, started at $19.00 an hour!! They are begging me to work more hours however I am almost 70 and I get tired easily now!! I want to be happy during my shift, not riding a broom around the store!!
They JUST got the last part of the $15.00 an hour last January, NOW as we all knew it would not be enough NOW they are screaming for $22.00 GEEZE!! Fast food industries will just leave CA. the rents are outrageous, taxes on businesses are outrageous I think it will be cheaper to walk away from the leases they may have!!
$22 for fast food workers
Going to be a lot of buildings for sale or rent cheap.
This will work out so well...
Idiots.
Good for you!
I’m pushing 71 and still working full time. But mine is a desk job.
I’m retiring 12/31.
I hear you on the skilled trade pay ... unfortunately, it being California and all, they will still be living in their cars.
Nicer cars, I guess.
I agree that unions push minimum wage laws probably because the increases lead to ratcheting up the various pay levels. But this is also an out of control state government.
Rarely go over to California and don’t eat fast food, but this will likely also cripple most of their restaurants. Voting for fools and authoritarians has consequences. One more reason to be concerned.
Business owners should simply burn their properties to the ground and tell the government to build their own solutions. This has to be stopped and the only way is to force citizens to make a choice between freedom or the State.
You are so right. What the California fascists are doing now will cause the fast food industry to fall like a house of cards. There will be too many stupid California voters who will not see the connection.
