California Fast Food Wages Would Be Set by Government Under Bill Passed by State Legislature
WSJ ^ | Aug. 29, 2022 | By Heather Haddon and Christine Mai-Duc

California’s Legislature passed a bill Monday to create a government panel that would set wages for an estimated half-million fast food workers in the state, a first-in-the-U.S. approach to workplace regulation that labor union backers hope will spread nationally.

The bill, known as the Fast Act, would establish a panel with members appointed by the governor and legislative leaders composed of workers, union representatives, employers and business advocates. They would set hourly wages of up to $22 for fast food workers starting next year and can increase them annually by the same rate as the consumer-price index, up to a maximum of 3.5%.

Great...so we will all have to pay for them via welfare. Can’t/won’t let the little darlings starve.

The last round of wage increases has helped fuel 9% inflation.

This is only more fuel to that fire.

Automating fast food doesn’t help maw and paw kettle running a diner and forced to pay higher wages in order to find workers.

Sounds semi-fascist, to me.

Nothing “semi” about it.

Pure textbook fascism.

With government getting into micromanaging the FF businesses the franchises will start folding like a house of cards. Anyone owning a franchise should look to sell now while they can still get something out of their investment. Pretty sure once the government steps in you won’t be allowed to sell or close while you still have a penny to your name.
Then the government takes over so no jobs are lost and the FF businesses will be run as efficiently as the DMV.
Oy vey....

Fast food will be completely automated within 5 years.

The only employees will be those that load and clean the machines.

The cleaning of the customer seating area could be contracted to avoid the minimum wage regulation.

PREDICTION - Predicting the future is for fools but I will play the fool for you.

Prediction 1 - The number of customers for fast food items will decrease.

Prediction 2 - Automation will look like a good alternative.

Prediction 3 - The number of fast food outlets will decrease.

Prediction 4 - One more rung on the ladder of success for young people will be removed.

Prediction 5 - Unemployment will increase

The real minimum wage is zero!

If the employee does not create more in value then what they are paid they will be let go.

Unions are *why* a burger flipper in Cali can make $22.00/hr. Of course, your burger probably costs no less than $15.00

A am not pro union but your post is ridiculous.

NYS now has any changes made to the state’s minimum wage done by an unelected committee.

Because of the massive over-supply of low skill immigrant labor in the USA, the only way to force business owners and executives to invest in automation and expert software is to make human labor un-affordable.

The high minimum wage is designed to coerce employers into hiring illegal aliens off the books.

I used to travel a lot to California for military-related meetings until COVID restricted travel. Things are picking up again. I used to spend extra time sight-seeing in California with any spare time I might have. NO MORE. I will flt in...do the meetings and fly out. I will not spend a dime off the installations if I can help it. Wage control by the government is communism...I won’t support that.

The math does not work. The No Wall Street Urinal is pushing for cheap labor and open borders - again.

ECON 101:

Background:

Restaurants should aim to keep labor costs at about 30% of sales, as a general rule of thumb. Some restaurants, however, are able to achieve a lower number, while others must achieve a higher one. Labor costs are typically lower in casual establishments such as counter-service cafes and fast-food restaurants.

If labor goes from say $15/hr to $22/hr then labor costs increases 50% and the OVERALL costs goes up 15%. A burger goes from retailing for $7.00 to $8.00 each.

Get it?

RE: Set government wages for fast food restaurants...

Communism from the ground floor up. And the non-skilled workers will embrace the concept enthusiastically.
