Elon Musk told GOP congressional leaders and big-dollar donors on Tuesday that Republicans need to present a more compassionate front to voters and appeal to immigrants like himself, Axios has learned.
Why it matters: While Musk has been publicly flirting with the Republican Party all year, his attendance at an exclusive GOP retreat in Wyoming marks a new level of involvement in helping the party define its agenda and prepare for its potential takeover of the House.
Driving the news: Musk offered a robust defense of capitalism in addition to some political advice at House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy's annual donor retreat in Jackson, where the billionaire CEO of Tesla was a personal guest of McCarthy’s.
With the Grand Tetons behind them, the potential next Speaker of the House led a Q&A session with the potential next owner of Twitter. McCarthy has built a relationship with Musk over a decade and introduced him as the "Thomas Edison of our time," framing the discussion around how he built successful companies like Tesla and SpaceX.
Across the state, primary voters were rejecting Rep. Liz Cheney, who by the end of the night would be overwhelmingly defeated by her Trump-backed challenger.
What they're saying: Musk suggested that the country would prosper if Republicans "stayed out of people's bedrooms" and Democrats stayed "out of people’s wallets," according to attendees…

Room 101?
Life is not about being coddled and catered to. Life is hard and the sooner people learn that, the better off they will be.
“Musk tells GOP elite to be more compassionate...”
Here we go with the back peddling ...SOME people do not realize how much courage it takes to be a Conservative
It's hilarious to watch converts to Conservatism, when they run into the kind of bullying and intimidation that long-standing Conservatives face on a daily basis!!
When they take up Conservatism they bask in the glow but later on when their former Liberal friends continue with their cheap shots on Conservatives...well, they just can't resist running back to the security of gratuitous smearing of Conservatives!!
Define compassion.
This was nothing more than GW Bush revival meet. 'Compassionate Conservative'.
Maybe it’s because of their Euro background and manner of speaking but Musk’s ‘compassionate’ comment indicates he may be a conservative in the mold of Ahnold Schwarzenegger.
He needs to buddy up with an actual conservative.
Spend more time with your kids, no more time with women.
;-D
I’ve lost confidence in Musk. I first applauded his attempted takeover of Twitter.
But looking back, the timing of that buyout attempt was suspicious. Truth social was just taking off and Musk may have attempted to steal the thunder from Truth social — prevent it from succeeding. Now Truth social is on a better footing as Android/Google is supporting it, not just the Apple mobile platform.
Certainly Musk is trying to stay in good graces with Republicans: he correctly read the tea leaves that Biden is in trouble and the House will soon be under GOP control.
But Musk is not a big fan of Trump, in part because Trump wants electric cars to pay for themselves and not get the outrageous federal subsidizes they HAVE been getting. That flies against Musk’s burning desire to see the subsidies continue and grow. He’s made billions from those Government handouts.
In the end, Musk is out to protect his own businesses. Tesla’s stock is down 17% from its peak last November. And notice: he’s toned down his hype over Tesla cars (and auto- driving cars). Instead he’s thrown out the idea that Tesla is a “manufacturing titan” who might produce family robots, for example.
But if Tesla’s long range prospects are excellent, why was he interested in Twitter anyway? He’s got his hands full already.
Meanwhile, the early advantage he had in the U.S. electric car market is likely to fade as Ford and GM compete heavily for the same business.
Which means Musk is reaching out to the GOPe, in my view, because the GOPe and Musk need each other. Now that Liz Cheney was destroyed, DeSantis is helping Lake and Mastriano, and Truth Social is on the move, the GOPe party of McConnell and Golden Sacks is in big trouble. Thus Musk becomes a useful lever for them.
So now we see Musk dancing with RINO McCarthy and pushing a “compassionate” Republican Party. Hey, Elon, is that like “compassionate conservative”, the chant of Never Trumpers?
And if Musk truly believes in free speech social media platforms, why doesn’t he also have a site on Truth social? Put your money where your mouth is, Musk. You can keep your Twitter site alive.
Add it all up, it looks to me that Musk is a wolf in sheep’s clothing, ready to pounce on unsuspecting MAGA lambs.
What say ye, FReepers?
Have no fear, poconopundit, the EV nerds will start coming at you, I’m sure.
But…..

If it weren’t for money being stolen from the taxpayers, these things wouldn’t be what folks think they are.
It’s be real nice to see EV owners that are using the power grid….a tad hypocritical I’m thinking, to have to pay some type of surcharge given the strain the charging puts on the system.
Or, better yet, if you have an EV it has to be charged by renewable sources. For the environment and all.
appeal to immigrants like himself….
So the Republican Parry has to appeal to millionaire and billionaire venture capitalists?
You have got to be EFFIN’ kidding me with this BS?
Musk needs to clear up some of our fears... I read something some time back that Musk didn't want the government subsidizing electric cars... His or anyone else's ... Time will tell. It takes a while for new converts to see and understand our ways. I'm willing to give him the time he needs...
The other thing Musk needs to understand is Democrats are NOT compassionate... they ‘give’ to their ‘pet victim’ groups and ‘elites’ thugs to gain loyalty and power.
It’s been decades since democrats have acted out of compassion - on anything.
Thomas Edison of our time….
Holy SH*t. Does McCarthy not know that musk didn’t invent the damn car or technology. That he invested in an already formed company and then took about with the marketing and advertising. Capitalizing on ignorant state governments that handed out tax breaks to the rich so they could buy a Sunday Driver that was about $120k when they first came out.
Georgia was giving $5k to some millionaire in Buckhead and Alpharetta.
Good Lord. But so many on here would happily get on their knees for this man and his toy cars.
IIRC, I saw a headline that a state was banning these disasters. Something that can be fooled with a pen laser. Awesome.
“Compassionate conservatives” just end up conserving the latest gains of the radical left.
It [would] be real nice to see EV owners who use the power grid... to have to pay some type of surcharge given the strain the charging puts on the system.
Or, better yet, if you have an EV it has to be charged by renewable sources. For the environment and all.
* * *
Excellent! Tell them to put their money where their mouth is. If mandating electric cars is so important, then they should be powered by renewable sources only.
I am all for Musk from the perspective of Freedom of Speech...but he isn’t a conservative in many things.
I do believe we need his voice as an ally at this time, because in my opinion, Freedom of Speech is one of the blocks of the foundation of our country.
And it is being eroded. This is one of the most important fights of our time.
So, even if he sucks at the government teat with his EV subsidies, and even if he believes in this transhumanism thing, and even if he believes in the metaverse as our future, I don’t care right now.
We need people to speak out on Freedom of Speech. And he does that.
Even if I don’t know his motives, he does that. And we desperately need people who do that.
“Compassionate Conservatism” is what got us George W Bush. No thank you. I still remember him uttering those two words in his convention spiel.
All it really means is, “I’m dumb enough to believe your lies and think bending over backward will change you.”
