Weekly Garden Thread - August 13-19, 2022 [Marianne North, Botanical Artist Edition]
August 13, 2022 | Diana in WI/Greeneyes in Memoriam

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.

This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.

NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!

Glad to see predictions of above normal for Wisconsin; I want a snowy winter! I haven’t been on my snowshoes in the last two seasons. Either ‘crunchy & icy’ snow, or none at all. :(

I’d like a nice snow pack of about 12” to insulate everything AFTER Deer Season, then we’ll take it from there.

I don’t ask for much, LOL! :)

These ‘long range forecasts’ are for entertainment purposes ONLY...according to AccuWeather, CURRENT conditions in my area state ‘light rain’. LOLOL...it is CURRENTLY pouring like hell.

Has anyone else out there noticed that their local ‘farmer’s market’ has been changed to a ‘community market’?

What’s a community market?

Only thing I noticed is that this year, with temps near 100 when tomatoes won’t ripen, all the sellers had red tomatoes and they happened to look just like the typical slicing tomato you’d find in the grocery store. All the markets have a rule that you’re only supposed to grow what you sell.

Now that the weather has cooled enough for tomatoes to ripen, they all have what looks more like farmer’s market tomatoes. Varying colors, not perfectly round etc.

LOL...rarely enforced. We have markets here in East Tennessee that offer big fat red tomatoes for sale in MAY...you know damn well no one in this area had them ready this early, even though the same 'rule' is in place.

As for 'community market'...it is just a red flag that you may have progressives involved in the operation(s) of your market...not a good thing.

"1000 inches of snow and single-digit temps for New England would be AWESOME! (I would wish for below-zero temps, but those temps wouldn’t be practical for heavy snow...)"You must have liked 2015 then:

no one alive, or even those recently before us, have had to go through a month as cold and snowy as this one.

https://www.cbsnews.com/boston/news/the-most-extreme-winter-month-ever-observed-in-new-england/ Which was after the NOAA, per usually, forecast warmer than average temps for NE:

But the Almanac is worse.

Not up here. Yet.

The very famous ‘Dane County Farmer’s Market’ hasn’t changed their name and it’s run by a bunch of Bleeding Heart Liberals out of, ‘The People’s Republik of Madistan,’ so they’d be the FIRST to Virtue Signal around here.

I just noticed the change this past week...our farmer’s market is now a community market...I am curious to see if this becomes a national trend...or not.

As a kid, I shoveled snow that was almost as tall as me during the Blizzard of ‘78 in Mass. Made some money but should have charged way more. I was 13 and the smallest kid in my class.

We had a flat roofed carport made of old rough sawn oak and it was my job to shovel that off when it got to 6-8 inches thick because my dad was worried it would collapse with too much snow and he was also worried about it collapsing with him on it. I would have healed but if he fell through, our sole source of income would have been gone and he had good health insurance on me at the time. No braina.(brainer) Got 3 foot of snow in a couple of days so I shoveled that roof quite a few times.

I was on FB on 2015 and remember the pics that old friends posted which were similar to ‘78.

I was working at a dairy farm when the Blizzard of 78 hit, leaving 3k cars and trucks on Rt. 128 and over 30” of snow on the ground and martial law in effect. The people cheered when the milk truck showed up, as milk, bread and eggs went fast. Thank God for it all.

As was right. Today in this city I rarely see the young shoveling snow, versus the parents and adults.

I had no camera aside from web cams, and took the below with one, carrying a laptop:

Snow 10-11-15.b4 16 more

Thank God. Looking forward for more if God wills.

My sister slid off to the side on a hill in Hanover and put her ‘71 Camaro off to the side of an entrance of a business. The next day, the plows had buried it so my dad stuck a sign on the snow plow back saying “Buried Car” so the plows wouldn’t hit it during further clean up. When the snow stopped we dug it out and it would have made on helluva battery commercial because that thing fired right up and my dad drove it right out of what was basically a dug channel in a 15 foot tall snow mound.

Rear wheel drive no less, I assume!

If speaking about 1978, I worked at Richardson's dairy and the forecast was only for a few inches, and I had to get in early (4AM) to help process milk before loading the 12 ton truck and head to stores in Malden, Everett and Lynn (Tuesday's run being done on Wed.). I woke up about 3AM to find many inches of snow, and shoveled for a long time (living in Danvers) to get to the street, only to find that even with 15'' studded snow tires on my 67 Catalina then I could not drive.

That night I went in to help process milk, and loaded the truck, and slept across the street where the pasteurizer and wife were staying. Next morning I found myself about the only vehicle on Rt. 1, and the big 10.00 truck tires dug thru the snow well enough. First stop normally got 15 cases (9 half gals to a case or 4 gals) for two days, and owner said "give me all the milk you can" so i gave him 90 cases (which I should not have).

Then he asked us (I had a young helper) to go down the street and pick up 100 loaves of bread. We owed him a favor so i did that, and an hour later we came back. With no racks the bread was stacked like milk cases and so the bottom ones were like pancakes, which they sold like. Owner said he had 10 cases of milk left. All the stops were looking for milk. We were trying to catch up to demand for as few days. Thank God for His manifold grace.

Yes, that fall planting calculator is nifty for sure.

Keep in mind that pretty much everything on the list is, at the least, slightly tolerant to frost, and will be fine outdoors until the first hard freeze.

I’ve had kale and collards last until spring through some very brutal winters without any covering.

I planted an 83 day sweet corn on 8/12. I think my chances for getting a crop from that are pretty good. August-planted corn has succeeded for my every time I’ve tried it.

Using Jung Seed helps, too. ;)

Remind me which variety? I planted Kandy Corn and Ambrosia, in late June. It’s just about ready to harvest.

Many hardy crops actually taste better after a light frost, cabbage for instance.

Also as you(I think) said of Ctrl MO, we might not get a hard freeze until next year.

I think our gardening dates are more like first mush date and last mush date with the soil being Jello in between where being able to walk in the garden is an issue.

Of course there are the few times when the Jello freezes and might have a 1/4” coating of ice on it in the morning. Rarely frozen hard for days on end. Snow usually melts from the bottom up.

Couple of publications on my cloud.

Peaches and Cream from Jung’s 100%.

If it doesn’t freeze out I should be swimming in sweet corn come November.

This was my mom's favorite. Some sellers call it an F1 hybrid and some call it heritage.

Augie, sweet corn, go for it! I think you will get it and if not, your loss is the cost of seed and gas for tilling.

70 Qts of Tomato products!! Wow! Spaghetti and gumbo all winter! (We have 16 quarts with possibly about 12 more quarts to do.)
