Although the issues surrounding “climate change” are among the most consequential ones in our politics, you have probably noticed that head-to-head debates on the subject are quite rare. The main reason is that proponents of climate change orthodoxy generally refuse to debate anyone who questions any aspect of the dogma.
So you will be glad to hear that a real debate between significant figures on the two sides of the issues will shortly take place at — where else? — the Soho Forum. That’s the organization where daughter and frequent Manhattan Contrarian contributor Jane Menton is the Chief Operating Officer. The date of the debate is Monday, August 15.
The debaters will be Andrew Dessler and Steven Koonin. Here are pictures of the two:

Dessler is Professor and Director of the Texas Center for Climate Studies at Texas A&M University. He is the author of numerous books and articles on the subject of climate change, including the textbook Introduction to Modern Climate Change, now in its third edition. Koonin was Undersecretary for Science at the U.S. Department of Energy during the Obama Administration, and currently is Professor and Director of the Center for Urban Science and Progress at New York University. Koonin is the author of Unsettled: What Climate Science Tells Us, What It Doesn’t, and Why It Matters.
The two men recently gave back to back interviews on Joe Rogan’s podcast, but this is the first time they’ll be going head to head.
The proposition for the August 15 debate is “Climate Science compels us to make large and rapid reductions in green house gas emissions.”
The debate will take place live and in person at the Sheen Center, 18 Bleecker Street, in Manhattan, at 6:30 PM (doors open at 6:00 PM). Tickets for the live event are $12 - $32, with the higher priced tickets including a reception afterwards. Alternatively, the debate can be viewed by livestream for a bargain basement price of only $6. To get tickets, you can go to this link.
I am one of the sponsors of this event, and I will there in person, as of course will Jane. We’re hoping for a big audience, both in person and online. If you come to the live event, it will be your chance to meet Jane and me in person.
I want to congratulate the Soho Forum for putting this debate together, and also express my appreciation in particular to Mr. Dessler for being willing, unlike many of his colleagues in the “climate” community, to put himself out there to face the critiques of his adversaries. At the present time I have no comprehension of how science “compels us” to do anything, but I’m looking forward to hearing Mr. Dessler’s explanation.
I think I will start calling it “The Religion of the Computer Model”.
Can someone at the debate please explain how they plan to reverse “climate change”. What is going to be done to the level of CO2 in our atmosphere, which is currently 0.04% (4/100ths of 1%)? The whole debate would turn into the (unfunny) joke that it is.
I’m likely to buy a ticket today for the online broadcast of this. Would like to see something more from the climate cult other than robotically saying “settled science, hoping for a rational debate based on fact.
What kind of debate is it when they’re both on the same page?
Given that the absolute dominant greenhouse gas that causes climate change, is water vapor by more than a hundred fold, I hope that is addressed, rather than dismissed with a flick of the wrist.
The Sun is the source of climate change on Earth, Venus, Mars and other planets in our solar system.
“I think I will start calling it “The Religion of the Computer Model”.”
Funny story. I had recently started working as a Microbiology researcher at a large industrial research lab when the Manager of a different group invited me to attend a seminar for a potential new hire. I listened to the seminar and afterwards the Manager came by to ask me what I thought. The seminar was about modeling the growth of a bacterial culture under various conditions. I told him that I wasn’t a fan of modeling, that I had never seen one worth a damn and it was easier and faster just to run a few experiments to get the data you need. Furthermore in any case you still need to run the experiments to confirm the model. He got a funny look on his face and told me that he was a modeler. Awkward.
I wish they would print that pie graph of the atmosphere on the front page of every news paper and magazine in the country....and run it as a commercial every day on the hour.
I already figured out the truth about this subject. I don’t need a debate, I need a refuge from the insane global warming believers who run the world.
I love that idea. The sheeple need an edjumacation
ok. i didn’t read the article... just looked at the pictures.
one looks crazy. the one on the left, as appropriate. is he the one debating FOR man made climate change?
it is a shot in the dark. the other guy looks sane.
Yeah, Dessler is the guy on the left, with the crazy eyes.
he’s the model for all the climate believers... deranged and dangerous...
the debate will be settled by his models saying carbon is a heat modifier and will make climate worse, like too much salt in a recipe.
my question would be, is zero carbon in the atmosphere your goal?
cause we all die if that happens, how is that better?
Why don’t these climate wizards STFU, stop talking about it and start doing something about it with their OWN MONEY. We normal people are tired of hearing them whining all of the time.
It sounds more like a Swedish Meatball lecture than a debate. “HOW DARE YOU!”
With out China and India not in on the climate change agenda they are pissing in the wind and they know it evidence it’s all a scam for more control over the people to live by their rules one world order.
The debate is over.
The “climate change” clowns lied and lied and lied and lied—and only idiots pay attention to them anymore. It is like “debating” a seven year old child over whether or not the dog ate their homework:

“All the better to see you with, my dear.”
(HO train buff.)
Koonin was in Obies administration, but seems honest about the climate thing. Go to rlmorel’s response #60 in Tonga Eruption story posted at 7:40 this morning. Good outline of the man iirc.
