Passenger slapped with $1.8K fine after airport K-9 sniffed out McDonald’s meal (Australia)

Aussie officials are now particularly concerned about flights from Indonesia, where cattle are currently experiencing a foot and mouth disease outbreak, according to CNN. Experts say an outbreak down under could cost the country’s economy $80 billion.

A passenger flying from Bali, Indonesia to northern Australia has been slapped with a $1,874 fine after a police dog sniffed his bag and found two McMuffins and a ham croissant.

The passenger, whose identity has not been released, had not declared the Mcdonald’s breakfast order before arriving last week at Darwin Airport in the country’s Northern Territory.

“This will be the most expensive Maccas meal this passenger ever has,” Australia’s Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Murray Watt said Monday statement.

“This fine is twice the cost of an airfare to Bali, but I have no sympathy for people who choose to disobey Australia’s strict biosecurity measures, and recent detections show you will be caught,” he added.

The pup named Zinta that caught the hungry passenger has been specially trained as part of the Australian government’s recent crackdown on imported food.

Australia has eradicated foot and mouth disease and wants to ensure it doesn’t get brought back into the country through undeclared meat products, its government said.

“Australia is FMD-free, and we want it to stay that way,” Watt added of the fine for the Darwin Airport passenger. “Zinta was placed at Darwin Airport as part of the Albanese Government’s tough new biosecurity defenses, and it’s excellent to see she is already contributing to keeping the country safe.”

The government has committed almost $10 million to further prosecute illegal imports and stop the spread of diseases. Airports there now have sanitation foot mats.

Seems there was plenty of time to consume the evidence...

Certainly the airline meals were not superior!

Foot and mouth disease in cattle so they fine him for having cook swine meat.

Ranching is a huge part of the Australian economy, I would be damn serious too about allowing in imported goods from a country with a known livestock outbreak.

I’m hard pressed to believe hoof and mouth could survive the cooking process and be passed through a cooked item, but I can understand the stringent laws.

A security camera at the airport showed that the guy tried to make a run for it.
But with those big floppy shoes he didn’t get far.

Coming from Muslim Indonesia, he didn’t have time on that short flight to eat a couple of tasty ham sandwiches before landing?

Macho talk from politcal hacks seems to be a thing for Australians. They repeatedly did the same thing during the Djokavic controversy. And during Johnny Depp’s puppy smuggling scandal. Well, it’s their country. But it is particularly off-putting when their macho talk is, as in this case, all about compliance and nothing about real risk.

Once I was returning to Tucson after a few weeks working in Mexico. I had brought a ham sandwich for the drive, but hadn’t eaten it. The customs inspector at the border found it, and told me I couldn’t bring it into the U.S. I simply ate it then and there.

The Aussies should have offered the passenger that option.

Circa 2005 I got a verbal scolding from US Customs crossing the Canadian-US border after a day trip to Vancouver BC. Had an excellent dinner at a British gastro-pub with a steak and Guinness pie and had a little take-home box of leftovers.

The outrage. I had to leave the vehicle to a holding room while they did a bumper to bumper search for anything else besides that little Styrofoam box.

45 min later I was allowed to leave after they threw my leftover dinner in a special red garbage bin.

Bastards. That was a great meat pie. At least no fine.

“The pup named Zinta...has been specially trained...”

Our pup named Cody has NOT been specially trained, but will find any bit of food you have no matter how small.
