(CNN) - It’s so hot across the globe, roads and roofs are melting.
The deadly heat waves of the last week have sparked strange infrastructural events around the world as millions endure searing temperatures that are still on the rise.
The heat-related events also speak to aging infrastructures worldwide, most of which – roads, bridges, railroads, buildings – are not prepared for the sweltering conditions as of late.
So how hot has it been, exactly? Well…
It’s so hot, the runway at a London airport melted
The United Kingdom saw its hottest day on record Tuesday, when temperatures breached 40 degrees Celsius (104 Fahrenheit).
It’s been so hot that a runway at London Luton Airport on the capital’s outskirts had to be closed off as it melted in the heat.
“Flights are temporarily suspended to allow for an essential runway repair after high surface temperatures caused a small section to lift,” the airport tweeted Monday.
Heat causes materials to expand and crack when temperatures rise, according to the Pennsylvania State University College of Engineering – concrete and asphalt, found on runways and roads, are no exception.
It’s so hot, a museum roof melted in China
A heat wave has now engulfed half of China, affecting more than 900 million people – or about 64% of the population. All but two northeastern provinces in China have issued high-temperature warnings, with 84 cities issuing their highest-level red alerts last week.

They do know what asphalt is made with right the evil stuff they curse with every breath
I lived in Fresno in the mid 70’s and remember one summer it was 109 at midnight. Good thing we had AC back then.
“It’s so hot that hot water now comes out of both taps.”
That is the literal truth now at our place (southern Arizona), not an exaggeration. Well, the “cold” water is running about 87 or 88 degrees, not scalding or anything. By now the ground has heated to the depth of the water pipes, and we won’t have cool tap water again until October at the earliest.
>>seen with silver foil>p>
Aluminum foil would be cheaper and less conductive to heat.
In the last 40 yrs we’ve only seen 3 normal ones.
Swamp box = evaperative cooler
What Entity knows all about fire and high heat, can’t stand mankind the Image , and strategizes to take everyone else down with him?
What kind of idiot engineering and design do they have?
It’s only 100.
What are they gonna do when it gets hot?

This crap just makes me irritable as all get out.
That, and seeing the sheep out there bleating in unison “WE NEED TO FIX THE CLIMATE! WE NEED TO FIX THE CLIMATE!”
They swallow it just as completely as “FOUR LEGS GOOD, TWO LEGS BAD! FOUR LEGS GOOD, TWO LEGS BAD!”
Sustained high temps will buckle concrete sidewalk panels and freeway panels.
My wife and I spent a Labor Day weekend at Lake Shasta in 1998. It was scorching all along the west coast. We left Redding at 112 outside and as we were coming up I-5 into Tacoma heading to our house in Bothell, one of the freeway panels popped up against the flow of traffic about 10 cars in front of us. It was still 104 in Tacoma.
Imagine hitting a 10 inch thick wheel stop at 50 mph.

Asphalt pavement doesn’t melt. Asphalt tar products get pretty gooey.
Asphalt roadways well get softer and big trucks or a lot of traffic will make them rut.
Heaving asphalt at stop signs or signals is caused by heavy trucks stopping.
The newer asphalt mix designs reduce this.
Modern intersection design analysis is used to determine whether the intersection should be asphalt or concrete based on traffic loading and environmental conditions.
Sorry for getting technical. I retired after 30 years as a city and county engineer.
That’s what expansion joints are for. Very efficient. Leave them out when they’re called for...and you’re ..........
And people are freezing in Patagonia. The climate is crazy I tells ya.
What’s ‘normal’?
It’s obvious we can’t do anything to stop this, so we should just enjoy whatever little time we have left. Fall, Winter and Spring, mainly.
