GREENWOOD, Ind. — Within 15 seconds of a mass shooter opening fire inside the Greenwood Park Mall, Elisjsha Dicken got off 10 rounds, striking the shooter 8 times, and killing him.

Police say Dicken was shopping with his girlfriend Sunday at the mall when he stopped at a cookie counter close to the main walkways of the mall. When the gunman exited the restroom, beginning his shooting spree, police say what he did was nothing short of heroic.

Armed only with a handgun, police say Dicken first engaged the shooter from a distance of 40 yards. Police say he was very proficient and tactically sound.

According to police, Dicken hit the shooter from 40 yards away with his 9mm Glock on the very first shot. Johnson County Coroner Mike Pruitt said an autopsy found the suspect had eight gunshot wounds and none were self-inflicted. He fired 10 shots with an 80 percent strike rate.

Dicken started making his way towards the gunman, motioning for people to leave behind him. The gunman tried to retreat back into the restroom, but Dicken continued on, shooting the suspect until he fell.

“The surveillance video shows Sapirman exit the restroom at 5:56:48 p.m.,” Ison said. “He was neutralized by Dicken 15 seconds later at 5:57:03 p.m.”

Police took him to the Greenwood Police Department while they watched the security video and spoke with other witnesses to confirm what Dicken told them. During the whole process, police say Dicken fully cooperated.

Dicken had no police training or military background.

Police also confirmed Dicken was carrying a gun under the constitutional carry law that went into effect July 1.

“... charging a shooter while unarmed? Books are written about folks like this.”

And that hero’s name is Jack Reacher.

“So glad the police didn’t shoot him.”

By the time they got there, I would bet the weapons were holstered, and they probably had no real idea who shot who.
At least until they asked questions after the rush was over.

There is a great body of knowledge on this phenomenon.

Having been in dark places and done things, I attest that often, especially in the instant the SHtf, people can do what generally consciously is well above and beyond capability. Mundane things as well as critical things become reflex, if trained and learned to a relative degree.

I enjoyed running the obstacle course at Benning. Later, I watched how, at the 8-foot wall, some men would run up, place a foot into the wall at full speed, using momentum, lever themselves up and over in a moment, while others, likely as fit, would run up, hesitate, jump from a standstill and try to pull up and over, in a quite longer time, some not at all.

Recently, while playing catch with my family, I went for a long ball, looking over my shoulder, I ran through a rose bush, tripped, fell and caught the ball and followed through with a forward roll back onto my feet and was just fine (60 YO). Lifetime of combatives fall training, some ability and the will to not die...

As a competitive pistol shot and rifleman, I hope my match nerves and jitters never stop- especially in timed events in pistol- stop thinking- that was for training and execute.

This young man, apparently with no formal skill training (but I bet he has shot his pistol quite a bit), did a great thing. He is indeed a heroic man. Now, he needs to find support and encouragement because living with killing, even when necessary, lawful and appropriate, can be a burdensome thing. May God Bless him.

Mr. Dicken’s shooting was indeed phenomenal. Lots of natural talent combined with training, I’m sure.

Back in the 1930s, Ed McGivern and some other people did some studies of long-range revolver shooting. Using .357 magnums with a variety of sights, and shooting positions including prone and back-supported sitting, the shooters were able to make a significant percentage of hits on man-size silhouettes out to 500 and 600 yards.

When my oldest brother used to shoot a lot, he could usually hit an 8” target two or three times out of seven shots with his Gold Cup .45. Long range handgun shooting isn’t easy. (Well, the shooting is easy, it’s the hitting that isn’t.)

Yes, but you are shooting from a conscious mode, this young man was on reflex and autopilot, his brain was doing the work, his mind was running in the background. That’s how things go when the deal is real.

I bet if you jogged a half mile, got your BP and pulse up a few notches, then approached a target and shot as fast as you could from holster, you’d impress yourself a bit, start 10 feet, then progress further, add another target. Takes ammo. Keep up the marksmanship, it’ll pay dividends if ever you need stress fire precision.

I can hit a man sized target at 40 yards. However, with the adrenaline pumping and in a state of danger I doubt I could get the 80% hits he did in a combat situation.

That was most excellent shooting.

Bet his last thoughts were...”HEY! It is not supposed to happen this way!” just before the floor came up to hit him.

Only if he joined a reputable organization. Don’t fill this man’s head with BS.

I fully support this guy, but let’s not make him into something he’s not. He’s a guy who in the given situation, pulled it out and made a tremendous difference. God Bless him and protect him from follow on crap.

What you said. I challenge anyone here to do that to a STATIONARY target with a cold weapon in 15 seconds.

40 yards? I suppose that if they have this on tape they might be able to verify it. But I really think 40 ft is more likely.

I bet you are correct... 8 hits at 40 yards is next to impossible while running and rapidly firing, even for a super marksman!

“Also because the hero was a white guy with a gun that stopped a crazed killer.”

And the subhuman was white. Good case of white folks taking out their own trash. Would be good to see the same thing happened in the black community.

This seems to happen often with phone/camera images and/or their posting on the web.
For instance, look at the various images of the 4th of July parade shooter. Facial tattoos jump frome one side of his face to the other.

Does this gun carry 10 in the magazine? Or did he reload

A Glock 43x/48/26 have standard 10 rd 9mm mags. G19 has 15 rd. G17 has 17 rd. The smaller G43 is 6 rd. Absent the model info, it is likely one of the 10 rd standard models.

Local police officers got in a gunfight last fall with a felon who was in a drive-by shooting the week before and who was on the run. After a high speed pursuit he got his car bogged down in a yard and refused to listen to the officers command to show his hands and then to drop the gun. He came out of the vehicle with a handgun and the fight was on. One officer was under fire and got off three rounds with one being a lethal shot and killing the shooter. The two other officers fired between 20-30 rounds, handgun and AR-15 and were not under fire and missed completely.

It all depends on the person doing the shooting and how serious they take the training. I know the officer who fired the three rounds and he was brought up shooting from a young age and takes range time seriously.

Our club is about 50 miles west of us, but it’s worth the drive if we make a day of it.

My indoor range annual membership is $500 for a couple. It's a 50 mile drive one-way. We go to lunch at a nice restaurant and shop at the Natural Grocer store as a bare minimum leverage for the drive. I renewed my annual membership in late November 2019. COVID hit. We went to the range TWO TIMES. A really bad return on the membership. I haven't purchased another annual membership since. Ammo and gas prices are way up and ammo availability is still spotty. The weekly 50 rd practice sessions aren't happening as they had been from 1999 to 2019.
