[FLASHBACK] Miers withdraws Supreme Court nomination

Under withering attack from conservatives, President Bush abandoned his push to put loyalist Harriet Miers on the Supreme Court and promised a quick replacement Thursday. Democrats accused him of bowing to the “radical right wing of the Republican Party.”

The White House said Miers had withdrawn because of senators’ demands to see internal documents related to her role as counsel to the president. But politics played a larger role: Bush’s conservative backers had doubts about her ideological purity, and Democrats had little incentive to help the nominee or the embattled GOP president.

“Let’s move on,” said Republican Sen. Trent Lott of Mississippi. “In a month, who will remember the name Harriet Miers?”

If George W. MORON had his way, Alito is not on the Court and ROE would remain law of the land!

And “Day in the Life” threads. Lots of “Day in the life” threads. They should have a reunion so we can all jeer and insult them. Stinking Bushbots.

Bush’s conservative backers had doubts about her ideological purity

This was back when real conservatives were still allowed to hold some power in the GOP. Bush and his minions have been purging them slowly over the past 20 years and there really aren't any left that could actually influence policy anymore. Just a few tokens that they let talk or showboat in front of the cameras to give the base the impression that the GOP still is conservative.

2005 was Free Republic's finest hour.

Hard to believe it now in 2022, but destroying the Miers nomination and crushing the Bush-McCain Amnesty started right here on these pages.

The political energy and the passion were thrilling.

Any post that went up about Miers or Amnesty would get 100 comments within the first hour.

“2005 was Free Republic’s finest hour.”

Yes. I was a relative newbie then but am glad I played a part.

Yep, GWB tried to stick up with another Souter just like his dad did, but we caught on in time. Wishy Washy Roberts is bad enough (another GWB “gift”) but at least he’s on the right page about half the time.

If George W. MORON had his way, Alito is not on the Court and ROE would remain law of the land!

If John Kerry had been elected in 2004 and George W. Bush not re-elected, ROE would remain law of the land! (No Justice Alito)

If Michael Dukakis had been elected in 1988 and George H.W. Bush not elected, ROE would remain law of the land! (No Justice Thomas)

If Chuck Schumer had been the majority leader in 2016 and not Mitch McConnell, ROE would remain law of the land! (Garland would be on the Supreme Court)

If Chuck Schumer had been majority leader in 2017 and not Mitch McConnell, ROE would remain law of the land! (No Justice Gorsuch)

If Chuck Schumer had been majority leader in 2018 and not Mitch McConnell, ROE would remain law of the land! (No Justice Kavanaugh)

If Chuck Schumer had been majority leader in 2020 and not Mitch McConnell, ROE would remain law of the land! (No Justice Barrett)

Overturning Roe v. Wade, not to mention the significant number of 5-4 decisions that would have gone the other way, is more than a dimes worth of difference...however frustrated and even infuriated we can get with our less than ideal politicians at times.

“Maybe because she killed her classmate?”

Looked her up in wikipedia. Nothing about that. Virtually nothing in her “Personal” section.
