Nearly $100K stolen from ex-Raptors star Vince Carter's home

ATLANTA — Nearly $100,000 in cash was taken in a weekend burglary at the Atlanta home of former NBA player Vince Carter, according to an incident report released Wednesday by Atlanta Police.

Two guns and more than $16,000 was recovered later outside the 10,000-square-foot (900-square meter) home in Atlanta’s affluent Buckhead neighborhood. Carter told police the recovered money was a small portion of $100,000 in cash he kept in a bag in a closet, the report said.

According to the report, Carter’s wife, Sondi Carter, was in bed with her two sons when she heard loud noises around 11:50 p.m. Sunday. They hid in a closet and she called 911, then texted her neighborhood patrol. A neighborhood patrol officer, who was the first law enforcement to arrive, saw a man fleeing in a black SUV but was unable to catch him, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.

Neither Sondi Carter, nor her children, were hurt, but police said a front window on the main house had been smashed. Outside, officers found “a large amount of $100 bills spilled on the ground,” along with a gold Desert Eagle pistol and a black Glock 26 pistol with an extended magazine, the report said. The Desert Eagle belonged to Carter, but investigators believe the Glock was carried by the suspect, the incident report said. While in the closet, Carter later told police, she could hear someone rummaging through different rooms upstairs. According to the report, multiple rooms were in disarray and a gate at the top of the stairs had been broken off its hinges.

Fulton County property records show the home, built in 2016, is owned by Vince Carter, who played 22 seasons in the NBA before retiring with the Hawks in 2020. Carter bought the home, which sits on nearly an acre and a half (.6 hectares) of land, for nearly $7 million in August 2020, property records show.

A real estate listing described the property as a “family compound” with “state of the art home security” that includes 16 closed-circuit security cameras. A fence also appears to encircle the home, including an electronic gate across the driveway.

Police have not publicly identified a suspect, but the incident report said a fingerprint from the suspect was collected from the scene.

Carter, who now works as an NBA analyst for ESPN, has not responded to requests for comment from the newspaper.

Most people keep a fair amount of cash on hand. Based on his net worth, $100k isn't unusual.

As a percentage of his net worth $100K is pocket change. But why,in God’s name, would even a billionaire keep that much cash...or jewelry...in their homes. That’s what banks and safety deposit boxes are for.

And BTW...I'm far from rich, but I'm also far from poor (although The Big Guy is working on that). At any given moment you won't find any more than $50 (cash) in my house. You'll find credit and debit cards but very little cash.

I sure wouldn’t leave that much money in a bag, in a closet, downstairs, close to the door.

Not smart.

In a bag in the closet?

Good Lord, at least get a decent safe.

In any event, this was a small price for him to pay, and thank God no one was hurt.

Perhaps a new conservative in the making (”A conservative is a liberal who’s been mugged (or robbed or burglarized)”)

kept in a bag in a closet

I guess I had better move that bag to the refrigerator, pronto. They will never look there. 😋

With a $115 million net worth, $100,000 represents a tiny fraction of that - .00086957% to be exact.

The average net worth in the United States is $121,760.

A similar percentage of that would be $105.

Most people keep at least $105 in cash at home and that would not be thought unusual. Hell, I got more than that in my pocket right now.

So put in proper perspective, this is not a large amount of cash to Vince Carter considering his overall net worth. I don't think he lost any sleep over it.

Yes,this may well teach him an important lesson about the current state of affairs in the US of A. That is,unless he decides that it was some MAGA guy.

This incident reminds me of a great skit Chris Rock did years ago. It's called "Black People vs Niggaz" and it's easily found on youtube. In it he talks about the crooked stuff that "niggaz" do. At one point he says..."you can't have a big screen TV" and then he says "people who live *next door* to you will break into your house".

I wonder if this was some friend, family member of neighbor who did it.

Sounds like someone had inside intel on exactly where to look. A 10k sqft house has a lot of hiding places.

“..$100K in a bag in a closet? ...”

Yeah...that caught my eye too. Insane.
I can understand having a some cash immediately available, but in a closet???
A person of his means should, at very least, have a basic safe in the house to keep guns and cash in.
Almost willing to bet that someone he knows did this. They had to know that he had that in there. A safe would have slowed em down, if not outright prevented the theft.
