GREENVILLE, S.C. (FOX Carolina) - As the 100 deadly days of summer moves forward, we wanted to take a look at how one recently passed state law is affecting drivers.
The ‘move right’ law, or as many call it the ‘slowpoke’ law.
“If you are traveling on a controlled access highway, you should stay out of the left hand lane unless you are passing or overtaking a car,” said Corporal Joe Hovis, with the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

I remember reading that same article so many years ago. You are correct - it's good advice.
Hey, I’m always passing. Just looking for the next car to pass.
The only ones I want ticketed are the ones who drive in the left lane next to a truck on the right and maintain that rolling roadblock for miles. Some demographics harder hit.
Gary Larson was the Seinfeld of cartoonists. He covered all the important situations.
“You actually believe it’s OK to camp out in the left lane if you’re doing the speed limit.”
Fail:
I know what you mean about the far right lane in a three lane controlled access interstate or freeway.
I call them GOGO lanes. Only to be used for Getting On or Getting Off. Once you are on the freeway, move over to the middle lane so as to allow other drivers easier access to get on the highway.
It’s not just common courtesy, but a safety measure as well. Here in my state, Texas, you see professional truck drivers moving out of the slow lane whenever they are passing a stalled vehicle on the shoulder. In fact it is now a law here in Texas that you are required to move over when emergency vehicles are stopped on the shoulder.
If the speed limit is 55, it seems to be a habit in most of them to scoot over to the left lane and barely do over 55.
I noticed that law on I-65 when I moved to Kentucky. It made it infuriating when there were three lanes, ALL occupied by trucks creating a “mexican road block”. I actually watched a truck try to pull in front of a nice yellow camaro in the passing lane, and the camaro passed on the shoulder. (I’ve done that ten or so times in my lifetime as well. Sometimes you just gotta do what you gotta do. But here in Kentucky you are almost guaranteeing a flat tire.😋)
But sometimes I feel for the truckers because it is sometimes common for two trucks to be driving right next to each other at the same speed in the middle and right lanes.
On a side note: After my trip to St Cloud I’ve learned to LOVE two new developments in the US: The traffic circle and the double diamond overpass. There was a route we took several times that had FIVE circles on the route - all of which would be traffic lights in other areas. I LOVED that route because, though we had do slow down for each circle, we were always moving, and I’ve had the “zipper” concept down for decades. It was beautiful, man.😍
People constantly moving in and out of the left lane to pass, what could go wrong...
Mostly this is written to get people from parking in the fast lane and blocking traffic flow.
Worst one I ever got in was in CO.
A Toyota Prius was sitting in the fast lane driving 60mph in a 75 pacing two trucks in the next two lanes.
The backup was 2 miles long.
I’ve rented cars with adaptive cruise. Though I generally like it, the one challenge I had with it almost caused an accident.
To wit, I was behind a truck in the right lane and as soon as the next car passed me in the passing lane I pulled in behind him. I tend to do it with a foot or two between us, especially with a car going much faster than me. My car slammed on the brakes and I almost lost control - because it was utterly unanticipated by me, the driver. In fact, I thought something was defective until I thought it through and realized what had happened. The car just saw that bumper in front and said, “AHHH! We’re all gonna die! I’m too young to die!” And pretty much slammed on the brakes.
Heavy traffic has made wolf packs a bit of a rarity these days. In fact, on one road trip as we were driving outside a large city I commented to my wife that we were between wolf packs and how you don’t see that much any more.
Yeah. If you’re going to, if you need to do some aggressive driving, turn off the adaptive cruise control. ACC.
About 30 years ago I almost got a custom license plate frame that said, “To me, you are just a pylon”. 🤣
Actually, yes.
A law like this in Utah would require every policeman in the State to be involved in enforcing it. They would have time for nothing else.
Obviously you’re one who stays out there since you’re question radiates disapproval... Its friggin simple... If you have no one in front of you and you look in your rearview and there are cars behind you, you are a moron... Plain as the friggin day...
Hey, I’m always passing. Just looking for the next car to pass.
Ecclesiastes 10:2 -- The heart of the wise inclines to the right, but the heart of the fool to the left.
LOL
They aren’t oblivious. These are the people who were the drinking fountain monitors in grammar school. Self-appointed traffic wardens.
The modern "lane assist" cruise control systems are great for that. On my Subaru Outback, I just set a speed at about 65mph and let the car take over. It will slow down and speed up accordingly based on the car in front of you and it will also keep you in your lane. It also maintains a safe distance from the car in front of you.
You still have to be alert to people cutting directly in front of you but by and large, you just sit back and cruise. Makes a long drive much less stressful.
Read my post 15 and welcome to my “ignore” list.
