GREENVILLE, S.C. (FOX Carolina) - As the 100 deadly days of summer moves forward, we wanted to take a look at how one recently passed state law is affecting drivers.
The ‘move right’ law, or as many call it the ‘slowpoke’ law.
“If you are traveling on a controlled access highway, you should stay out of the left hand lane unless you are passing or overtaking a car,” said Corporal Joe Hovis, with the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

So the lane is supposed to be empty except for passing?
We have that law too and it has helped 🤪
So if one overtake a line of slower trucks that are in the right lane but it takes 2 minutes to get past them while driving the speed limit does that qualify as slo poke?
Yes; it is called a “passing lane”. Except for traffic jams, it is empty when a highway is functioning as designed. Upstate NY is a great place (or was) to watch roads function as designed; I assume Social Darwinism was removing bad drivers each winter.
Bunching up cars creates dangerous situations with so many others in blind spots. Enforcing the left lane for passing opens up the spacing.
Obstruction of traffic by brain dead motorists is a long time problem 🚗
“So the lane is supposed to be empty except for passing?”
No.
That was drilled into our heads in Driver's Ed in Missouri back in 1966 and I never forgot it. My wife always immediately jumps to the left lane on ANY multilane road and that drives me nuts. Of course, she learned to drive in California.
What's the difference between "passing" and "overtaking a car"? I suppose you could be overtaking a truck.
That is such a classic Larson cartoon! Great memory to bring that up.
“So if one overtake a line of slower trucks that are in the right lane but it takes 2 minutes to get past them while driving the speed limit does that qualify as slo poke?”
No.
That's a sick way to think of summer, so I should say "feel" about summer. Everyone needs to be afraid. When you hear this kind of BS, watch the other hand. If there is nothing more important than focusing on slowpoke drivers, then I need to move to South Carolina. I guess this is what you get from a people that elect Linda Graham. Wise-up SC, stop being pussies and being afraid. Summer isn't deadly. Focus on real problems, like removing every illegal from your borders. Like the opioid problem that came with those wetbacks.

IMHO nobody but major league JERKS impede traffic by traveling at the speed limit in the left lane.
It’s posted here : Left,Lane for Passing Only
AKA - lead follow or get the hell out of the way 🤪

Ride down 88 from Albany to Binghamton in the right lane and you will see why people drive in the left lane. The trucks have damaged the right lane so badly that it is almost impassable, particularly from Oneonta west. Sections of the Thruway are similar.
Here in the Houston area, there is too much traffic to leave an entire lane empty. Here we refer to it as the fast lane. I frequently drive in it on my way to work, and it always goes at speeds of 70-80. I like to drive nearer to 70-75 than 80, and if someone comes right up behind me because they want to go 80 or more, I move to the next lane to the right to let them get around me. If I stay in the lanes to the right of the fast lane, I will scarcely be able to drive faster than 60 (speed limit is 65).
On I 26 and I 95, the right lane is the Defacto 18 wheeler/RV lane and the speed is roughly 68mph
The left lane is for most 4 wheelers and moves at 70- 80 mph. Average is say 75. In cities, the speed decreases and the mix is not the same. Coming into Columbia from the north, there is 35-40 mile construction zone that really screws it all up. It is very bad news for a “wide load”. I shudder at the thought of driving 35 miles with a wide load through cities and towns on a 2 lane roadway
I remember reading a safe driving article in Popular Science around 1965 or 1966 when I was getting ready to get my license. A highway patrolman called them “wolf packs.” On long stretches of interstate where you can see long distances ahead, you can see several of these packs. That article pointed out that it is much safer to stay between them than get into one of them. That was and still is good advice for defensive driving.
NJ Law = Keep right EXCEPT to pass.
I seriously doubt if 25% of people know this is the case.
So the lane is supposed to be empty except for passing?
I hate that aspect because in many states that lane is smooth as puddin’, but the other lane(s) are very rough. I’ll hang out there until a car comes up behind me. Then I’ll pull over and let them by.
They followed this rule scrupulously in Portugal, and it worked great!
