If the Federal age to own a gun is raised to 21 should the age to join the military be raised also ???

Just a point for discussion.

If a Federal law is passed to raise the age to 21 as a requirement to buy or own a firearm, shouldn’t the age requirement to join the military be raised to 21 also ???

How can we justify asking 18, 19 & 20 year olds to fight and possibly die for our country when we deny them on of the basic rights enumerated in the Bill of Rights ?

Yes, raise it to 21 for men but keep it at 18 for women.

Yes. When I turned 18 in Florida in the 1970s, I was able to celebrate my birthday in a bar. The drinking age was changed to 21 after I turned 21.

Back in July of 1971, I came home on leave from the Army at the age of 20 after already spending two years in the Army. The legal drinking age at time here in Michigan was 21.

I hooked up with a friend of mine who took me to a bar in Hamtramck owned by a vet who served me.

After I got out of the Army in 1972, I started hanging out at that bar and Hamtramck being what it was, had bars on almost every corner.

I stopped into another bar one night and darned if I didn't run into two guys who I spent basic training with at Ft. Knox, one of them was the bartender.

They ended up in Germany and I ended up in the Canal Zone.....

This could go on and on ....

Need to be 21 as well:
To decide to get an abortion ...
To decide to undergo sex-change therapies and operations ...

All this talk about age really does matter.

Drinking age went to 18 in Montana back in the day. It spawned an entire generation of raging alcoholics and drunk driving related deaths until it was raised to 21 again.

Y’know what would change the culture almost at once?

Raise the age for going to college as an on campus resident student to 30.

I blew off my first year of college at 18.

Let my draft deferment lapse.

Got drafted, married, two combat tours in VN.

Stayed in the Army and went to night school for 10 years.

Went to college as a resident student (via VA and Army bootstrap program) and got a degree in one year. Carried semester loads of 21 hours. Worked my tail off. Enjoyed wonderful family time. Behaved like an adult for a change, studied, took notes, did the readings, never missed a single lecture. Graduated Summa 4.0 when an A grade meant something.

The most exciting moment involving a student activity outside of class came when I was walking to a lecture and a woman student decided to enhance the campus “streaking” experience. She undressed at the crosswalk and ran off singing in quite a lovely voice. Although I never saw her face, I remember she was very likely the most beautiful woman in the world.

At age 30, I learned to value a college education even more than the streaking and other campus activities.

How about a Federal law requiring civilians be held to the same firearms training, discipline & security practices & standards expected of our soldiers in the military?

These op/eds I see that compare/conflate civilian gun ownership with military service are a little silly IMO.

Voting age should be raised as well if they change the age for firearms.

I agree. Age to vote, age to own a gun and age to be sent to war should all be the same. Choose whichever.

The evidence was there that showed this murderer was going to do something evil.

His parents, I believe are both illegals.

Perhaps one of the lessons to be learned is that illegals have absolutely no education about our government or our culture.

All they know is that there is more money here.

People who legally come here to become citizens have to learn about our country.

I think there is merit in looking at the crime statistics for legal and illegal immigrants.

For our own safety, we should demand that immigrants to this country must learn about our government, history and culture before being allowed to settle in this country.

A friend from Germany once told me that they teach the kids to drink before they learn to drive.

In the United States, they learn to drive before they learn to drink.
