First Time Visit To New York City Recommend Things to See and Do

Wife and I are planning a weeks trip to NYC, I’ve never been so I’m looking for recommendations on things to see or do. We’re planning on at least 1 broadway show and the MOMA but if you know of a cool thing or something really interesting I’d love to hear your suggestion, thanks in advance.

“Take the wife to 5th ave and go to Saks, Bloomys, Tiffany’s, then the “Miracle on 34th Street” Macy’s.”

Then if you have any money or strength left find an Ace hardware and buy some rope to hang yourself.

As a younger man I wanted to try skydiving but never made it. I did go soaring over the Rockies in a sail plane and got to fly it for a bit. The spirit of adventure still lives in my heart but my flesh is a little weaker these days.

I grew up in NYC’s museums, and learned every cheap, but wonderful date that NYC had to offer, from taking a cruise on the Staten Island, the top of the Empire State Bldg, the Armory at the Met Museum, Museum of Nat History, or just walking on a warm summer night on 5th Ave. It was a wonderful place.

I once hitched a ride on a weekend pass from Ft. Bragg, NC, just so I could walk around NYC for 10, 12, hrs. eat NYC food from pizza, to delis, to street foods, and just be invigorated by the atmosphere, the spirit of the greatest city on Earth.

You are absolutely right! It is all gone now! It has become a loathsome, dangerous, filthy cesspool, where only the criminals, crazies, and idiots, are not walking on full combat alert. The constant tension, the stress is unbearable. I truly miss NYC, but it’s gone. All of our cities are gone...maybe our entire country.

SAD is too mild a term. ENRAGING is more like IT!

KEEP THE FAITH.

That plan won’t work, won’t have any money or credit left for the rope.

“the top of the Empire State Bldg, “

So I assume you have been to the top at nighttime during the winter. Very cool because in all directions the warm air coming up out of the sub vents makes the streets look like they are filled with the white fluffy stuff that goes under a Christmas trees.

The pessimism and cold hard reality checks appearing on this thread are a hoot! Loves me some freepers. ;0)

Look for the “Thank You for visiting New York, come again” sign and don’t look back.

If you are going downtown I recommend the Wall Street Inn. Awesome little boutique place.

Cheers....to the good old days of Old NYC.

Your posts are bittersweet....reminiscent of the happier...and, safer days, that have been completely destroyed, thanks to ultra libs.

NYC and Long Island used to be business destinations for me. In every case, I handed my rental over to a local client, let him drive and choose things to see and dine at to and from client locations.

Back in 2014 or 2015, I lucked into finding a Greek cabbie on my trip, not having a local to drive and find parking. Once I knew that he owned his own medallion, I got his cell number and called him for every trip. Sure it cost a bit more but I never felt unsafe and never played the gauntlet of Uber and Russian taxi drivers.

On that trip I brought my teenage daughter and we stayed on Wall Street - being the week before Christmas, south Manhattan was practically deserted. Got in a Broadway musical, a Central Park visit and a visit to one of the old time classic Italian restaurants.

So if you can find a local cabbie, make him your friend, ask for their advice and tip well.

And have a fantastic time in NYC.

If you like jazz, go to a show at the blue note cafe in the village. It’s kind of pricey but we’ll worth it. A cheaper alternative is Small,s jazz club for local talent and a special experience. Walk through Chinatown and little Italy. Stopping to eat somewhere. Definitely go to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island tour. If you’re so inclined go to the Rosevelt Hotel and have a martini in their world famous lounge. Just a few of the things we did when our son and his wife were living there for a couple years on assignment. Don’t let people scare you away! NYC is one of the great cities of the world!

Our family fled from NYC (Brooklyn) when I was seven and never looked back. Like the movie; Escape From New York.

Yeah. We’ll stay in a Good hotel to be sure.

As for that guy that recommended the subway, I say, contract a limo service, your life is worth more than a few grand and a good driver knows the best/safest way around the city.

Better yet, shoot yourself before you go and save time and pain, NYC in 2022 is a shit hole and not worth your time or your life.
