Wife and I are planning a weeks trip to NYC, I’ve never been so I’m looking for recommendations on things to see or do. We’re planning on at least 1 broadway show and the MOMA but if you know of a cool thing or something really interesting I’d love to hear your suggestion, thanks in advance.
Why? The city is not worth visiting unless you have personal security.
We always enjoyed a toast to Ben and George, every visit to Fraunces Tavern....on Pearl St in the financial district.

The different craft beers and amazing fish and chips, are an added bonus, to the sacred history.
The Bill of Rights was passed, at the corner of Wall Street and Nassau, in the Federal Nat’l bldg...which is also where Washington’s Inauguration was held.
Good info, on Colonial NYC, here....

First, ignore everyone telling you to stay away. Yes, NYC isn't as great as she was, and the advice about situational awareness is spot-on. But she's not Detroit yet.
If you're religious, St Patrick's is worth the visit. If you're Catholic, I recommend St Agnes or The Church of St Michael.
One of my most favorite places in NYC is Bleecker St. There are lots of music venues and clubs. If that's not your style, at least visit Thompson St near Bleecker...perhaps the coolest chess store in the Universe is there.
Everyone recommending that you get a slice of pizza is right...but I'd go further and recommend getting pork fried rice from any dive Chinese restaurant (provided you're not on a restrictive diet).
Finally. I'd recommend MoMA over the Met. And keep your wallet in your front pocket. And leave your gun at home.
Ouch
Good movie.
At night, go to Hoboken NJ and to Boulevard East in Weehawken NJ; these offer your best views of the NYC skyline.
Sounds like something Alex Reiger from TAXI would say.
Go to the top of the Empire State Building.
Pop down to the terminal in Brooklyn and take the QE2 to England. :)
My God, man. This would be like having a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to visit the Somme region of France in July through November 1916.
The opportunity to just “visit” NYC came and went.
You won’t be able to protect yourself or your wife.
But it’s your choice. What I find odd is all the people giving you advice on places to see and things to do as if the events of the past 2 years never happened; as if BLM and Antifa and riots didn’t occur, and out of control crime there that we read about daily just does not exist.
The 2 times I went there I had “native guides” friends who had spent most of their lives there. Made a huge difference in getting around and seeing the hole in the wall places.
Take the wife to 5th ave and go to Saks, Bloomys, Tiffany’s, then the “Miracle on 34th Street” Macy’s.
Go into the lobby’s of the Plaza and the Waldorf.

Good luck and enjoy as much as you can while there. I spent some 20+
months there stationed in the Bkly Naval Yard while in the military. I
enjoyed it as we had free passes to sporting, plays/musicals. etc and I
took in many of them. Each section has many varying sites/businesses
ethnicity's etc. Good luck and I hope you enjoy. It will be an experience
you will remember for sure.
Thank you
Visit Trump Tower.
I suggested we stay at TT but wife didn’t like the TT in Chicago.
Crime levels are STILL below Dinkins’ term, and still not horrible in Mid-Town Manhattan. Plenty of cities (Philly, Dtroit, Chicago, LA) with worse crime. You know enough not to go to Bed-Stuy or Harlem.
For places to go:
Ditto on the Cloisters.
The food IS great, and you don’t have to go to the big name places in Mid-Town. Try to find some of the remaining ethnic neighborhoods, Polish (Greenpoint, Brooklyn), Jewish (Williamsburg, Brooklyn), Chinatown, Little Italy, etc. Any restaurant that thrives in such areas has to be pretty good. At very least, you’ll have a story. Ask locals. I once dated a Brooklyn girl who suggested a small French restaurant “Sans Culottes” (now closed), and it was extraordinary. The only catch was there was only one item on the menu (Cuck L’orange, if I recall). The meat and cheese tree presented before the meal was worth the price, though such things may not exist in post-covid times. The point? People who live there know where to go.
More available parking on Sunday, if you rent a car.
“It’s a once in a lifetime thing...”
It may well be! Go skydiving or something.
Once upon a time, in a land far far away, when I was in the U S Army, my teammates and I, parachuted into a shopping mall in Binghamton, NY.
The take-off airfield was 700 feet lower than the landing zone, or put another way, the landing zone was 700 feet higher than the take-off field, and our altimeters had to be adjusted accordingly.
It was kind of a big deal- and having worked in construction using builder's levels and transits, prior to joining the service, I knew that down was up, and up was down, when it comes to elevation discrepancies and surveying instruments. I basically disagreed with my team leader and adamantly expressed the fact that we had to set our altimeters to minus 700 feet to account for the 700 feet discrepancy, not by setting the altimeters to plus 700, which was the conventional wisdom of the moment. It was a tense exchange, but I was so confident that I won my team leader over, but it was a very delicate situation nonetheless, as I was the equivalent of a corporal (Specialist Fourth Class), and he was a Sergeant First Class, outranking me by 3 stripes!
Thanks. We love to find cool little places.
