Time to Rethink Trump's SCOTUS Appointments

Posted on 05/03/2022 10:00:38 AM PDT by Tell It Right

If the leaked SCOTUS opinion is authentic (Roberts says it is for what that's worth), then those of us, myself included, who have criticized Trump's SCOTUS appointments ought to attaboy them for trying to get rid of the horrible Roe non-law.

The ones in favor (according to reports) are: Alito, Thomas, Gorsuch, Kavanaugh and Coney-Barrett. Of course, the last 3 on that list were put there by Trump.

Trump went with Federalist society recommendations, but I also recall that this society supported John Roberts, so nothing is 100%. It should have been a red flag when Roberts denied his Federalist Society membership during the confirmation hearings.

No, it’s time to wait until the actual ruling comes down. Instead of prematurely celebrating over a well-written draft.

Yep, if it holds, you’re right.
Trump will be batting a thousand, compared to...

Reagan .333 (Scalia good; Kennedy, O’Connor losers),
Bush 41 .500 (Thomas good; Souter loser)
Bush 43 .500 (Alito good; Roberts loser).

The leak is intended to make one or more of them fold. It seems more and more likely that will happen. Roberts all but guaranteed it with his statement.

It’s not yet certain that these three Trump appointments will ultimately rule against Roe, and definitely not yet clear how consistently conservative their views on the Constitution will be in the years ahead. But it is clear that had Hillary won in 2016, we would be in a helluva lot more trouble as a nation than we are now.

Crazy that a Republican would put Souter on the court. Did that guy even rule for us one time on anything controversial?

Coney-Barrett is the money shot. Trump used political capital and got that done in the looming shadow of the election. I'm sure he got a lot of counsel to not push a controversial appointment before the election, but he understood that it was critical, more critical than his re-election. And he made that choice. Showing the great political chops and leadership decision making he has. Talk about a leader who made a difference.

Exactly. I’m tired of participation trophies being handed out immediately.

Bush 41 .500 (Thomas good; Souter loser)
Bush 43 .500 (Alito good; Roberts loser)

Both Bushes would agree with the assesment not not which ones are the “good” ones.

You’re correct, wait for the final decision, for the sake of argument, let’s assume the decision holds and Roe v. Wade is overturned.

The Republicans since Roe V. Wade was judged have said they are pro-life and every election since have declared they will fight to overturn Roe V. Wade, now that it might really happen, the Republican establishment is running for the hills, Susan Collins is already on record accusing nominees of lying to her.

IMO, the Republican Establishment never thought this decision would ever happen, now that it might happen they are freaking out.

It took Trump to nominate the justices to do what Republicans said they were fighting for, but did not really support.

Wrong on moron W Bush. Give him a .333 average. Harriet Miers, Alito, Roberts.... only outrage from conservatives prevented Miers from being put on the court.

It’s actually long overdue for INTRAstate schools to start teaching what the Constitution says and doesn’t say.

Bush II nominated Miers. If she would have made it, she likely would have voted no.
