Traditionally, men have dictated proceedings during a romantic encounter, but a new study suggests this could finally be changing.
Researchers in Kansas have analysed data from a survey of more than 20,000 heterosexual college students describing their most recent date.
They found that only around a third of dates (36 per cent) now involve the man asking the woman out, paying, and then initiating sex.

I think the writer is confused between “dictating” and “initiating.” One of the other is usually leading the direction, and the follower can go along or redirect or object.
Risk averse people tend to not lead. Society has metro-sexulized males, more betas as a fraction of the whole. Another way to put this is “empowering women.”

Your analysis is better. First “date” sex isn’t even dating. Your “alcohol fueled hook up” is a better description.
The young women are all on the pill, and the diseases they might worry about are treatable. Some are even good looking. Women’s Lib has been a boon to men in this area.

We need to keep in mind that colleges, starting around 20 years ago were telling female students to give permission to the male students when hooking up. “May I touch your cheek?, may I kiss your lips?, may I put my arm around you?” became checklist items and took the fun out of dating.
Men are afraid of being accused of something that prior to the lefts continued failures with social engineering was normal. Today, saying, “your hair looks nice” will get you arrested on sexual assault charges. No wonder men have backed off initiating anything.
I’d suggest to you that back in the day when we had a much healthier culture, far fewer than a third of “dates” ended with the guy initiating sex.
The “sexual revolution” was part of the globalist/Marxists bringing down our culture, the family, the US and, ironically, the population.

If you leap frog the “HE calls, HE drives, HE pays and HE comes to your house to pick you up” part of the date... then it isn't a date. At that point SHE isn't too discriminating, and HE isn't worth the effort.

Thank God I did my dating the old fashioned way. It was 31 years ago my future wife agreed to go to dinner and a movie. We still talk about it.

The term “beta” is getting tossed around in a somewhat cavelier fasion and getting assigned to anything and everything. What I believe you are referring to are not so much betas but rather Omegas. They are even lower than betas.
