I think the writer is confused between “dictating” and “initiating.” One of the other is usually leading the direction, and the follower can go along or redirect or object.
Risk averse people tend to not lead. Society has metro-sexulized males, more betas as a fraction of the whole. Another way to put this is “empowering women.”

Your analysis is better. First “date” sex isn’t even dating. Your “alcohol fueled hook up” is a better description.
The young women are all on the pill, and the diseases they might worry about are treatable. Some are even good looking. Women’s Lib has been a boon to men in this area.
If you leap frog the “HE calls, HE drives, HE pays and HE comes to your house to pick you up” part of the date... then it isn't a date. At that point SHE isn't too discriminating, and HE isn't worth the effort.
Thank God I did my dating the old fashioned way. It was 31 years ago my future wife agreed to go to dinner and a movie. We still talk about it.

I grew up in a time when the traditional date did not involve sex. Not in the getting to know each other phase, which took more than a few dates.
And now the traditional date does involve sex. Initiated by the man of course. Initiated by the woman, not traditional.
