Scientists hunt for meteorite which 'fell on Shropshire'

Rob Waugh Rob Waugh·Contributor Tue, 19 April 2022, 7:56 am·2-min read The fireball streaked above Shropshire last week (Gareth Oakey, UK Meteor Network) The fireball streaked above Shropshire last week. (Gareth Oakey, UK Meteor Network) A huge fireball that streaked across the sky last week may have left a meteorite somewhere in Shropshire, scientists believe.

Dr Luke Daly, of UKFAll and the University of Glasgow, said: "We think about 500g of meteorite survived to the ground in approximately four fragments just south of Shrewsbury.

"Given the amount of wheat and oilseed rape in the area, we have been literally looking for a needle in a haystack.

"Now the UK Fireball Alliance are asking people in the area if they've found anything interesting in their back gardens or driveways over the bank holiday weekend to let them know."

The scientists have warned anyone who may have seen a meteorite not to pick it up with bare hands, and instead use aluminium foil or a sandwich bag.

Professor Katie Joy, of the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, said: "The meteorite won't be hot and is as safe to handle as any other rock, but please don’t pick it up with your bare hands as that would contaminate the stone.

"It's probably a glossy black or brown colour, maybe with the dark crust broken off in places. The largest pieces won’t be bigger than an Easter egg, and the smallest could be the size of a mini egg."

I always take my metal detector when I go to the desert to find meteorites. So far I’ve found some nails and other worthless crap.

Good luck with that. Once it’s on the ground it just looks like a rock.............

“oilseed rape” sounds like Shropshire is short of lube. The rape of oilseed must not be allowed to continue?

We stopped that sort of thing from happenng in America by call it what it is “ rapeseed oil.”

"Given the amount of wheat and oilseed rape in the area, we have been literally looking for a needle in a haystack."

well... no. You may be "literally" looking for a meteorite in a haystack, not a needle.

Easter Sunday we were in Harz Mountains and found Milky Quartz.
This is one piece, with a porcelain frog for scale that I bought in the Wernigerode Castle gift shop:

Here is a piece of milky quartz I dug-up with my stick, to the right another still in the ground.
Milky quartz is common but we only found it in one area.
We found 7 pieces in a 100 yard area along a trail to the Rapunzel Tower.
Wernigerode Castle from the top of Rapunzel Tower.
The Poor Peoples Tavern is about 50 yards below Rapunzel Tower.
We had curry lamb and our daughter had fish.
Yes it was open on Easter Sunday.

These guys act like the meteorite belongs to them, which I suppose may well be the case over there. If I found a meteorite on my property they could go to the auction and bid on it just like anyone else.

They are welcome to pick up all the rocks on this place. After they were done I’d have a nice lake.

The largest pieces won’t be bigger than an Easter egg

As opposed to non-Easter eggs, which are not only different in color from regular eggs, but apparently different in size.

Actually we call it “canola”. For some reason, “rapeseed oil” doesn’t sell as well in the grocery store ...
