In a new study conducted in rats, scientists report evidence that vitamin K could help protect against aging-related cognitive declines associated with Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia.
"Vitamin K2 demonstrated very promising impact in hindering aging-related behavioral, functional, biochemical and histopathological changes in the senile aging brain," said Mohamed El-Sherbiny, Ph.D.
Vitamin K is a group of compounds that includes vitamin K1, found in leafy greens and some other vegetables, and vitamin K2, found in meats, cheeses and eggs. Previous studies have linked vitamin K with processes involved in brain functioning, and some studies have associated vitamin K deficiencies with Alzheimer's disease and dementia.
The new study elucidates some of the biological pathways through which vitamin K appears to help preserve cognitive functioning. The researchers investigated the effects of menaquinone-7 (MK-7), a form of vitamin K2, in 3-month-old rats, an age at which rats have reached maturity. One group of rats received supplemental MK-7 for 17 months while the other group did not.
The researchers used validated tests including a maze, swim test and sociability test to assess the rats' cognitive functioning and depressive-like and anxiety behavior. These tests revealed that rats that received MK-7 performed better than those that did not. Vitamin K supplementation was associated with reduced evidence of cognitive impairment, depression and anxiety, along with improved spatial memory and learning ability.
In addition to various forms of vitamin K found naturally in foods, vitamin K supplements are commercially available. However, researchers cautioned that more studies are needed to determine whether the new findings translate from rats to humans and to identify the optimal source and dose of vitamin K to reap potential brain benefits. People taking certain blood thinners and other medications are advised to avoid vitamin K supplements and foods rich in vitamin K.

My wife and I enjoy occasionally eating natto, which is available at Asian supermarkets in the frozen section. They come with packets of mustard and sweetened vinegar sauces as taste options. Let them unfreeze in the frig or on the countertop. One styrofoam package has at least hundred milligrams of Vitamin K2-MK7, and if you let it ferment for another couple days, it acquires more, but starts smellying and tasting of ammonia, which the sauces counter, due to vinegar. Just eat them when they are first thawed, if too grossed out.
We also take a Vitamin K/K2-MK4/K2/MK7 supplement. The absolute highest amount, and effectively the level used to reverse calcium plaques by 50% in twelve weeks (in a prior study) is available in Koncentrated-K, but we normally take two Super K gelcaps from Life Extension.
Do note that doctors have to adjust older blood thinning drugs, based on knowledge of your daily intake of various amounts of Vitamin K. If you are on one of the newer blood thinners, Vitamin K has no impact, but you should still talk with your doctor.
Vitamin K is required, so taking drugs that deprive you of something needed for life sort of defeats the purpose of saving life, in my opinion.
Eh! Not interested in anything that benefits Democrats!
(Low hanging fruit, couldn't resist!)
Koncentrated K bump!
Sounds like they got Biden to take some tests. How did he do?
Rats ought to live forever for as much as we have benefitted them over the years...............
For Rats? I can’t believe democrats haven’t scarfed up the entire supply.
Please add me to the ping list.
Thanks in advance,
Tatt
That’s why I eat lots of spinach, fresh and steamed.
“Vitamin K in Spinach Each half cup of cooked spinach contains 444.2 micrograms of vitamin K, while a half cup of raw spinach only contains 72.4 micrograms.”
https://www.montalvospirits.com/how-much-vitamin-k-in-a-cup-of-cooked-spinach/
Recommended Daily Allowances
“Men over 19 years old need 120 micrograms of vitamin K daily. Non-pregnant, pregnant and nursing women 19 years old and over need 90 micrograms of vitamin K each day. The National Institutes of Health’s Food and Nutrition Board recommends that teenagers of both sexes from ages 14 to 18 should have 75 micrograms of vitamin K daily, and that children from 1 to 13 years old require between 30 to 60 micrograms each day. The recommended daily allowance for infants is between 2 and 2.5 micrograms.”

We eat a fair amount of spinach, too, but the standard Vitamin K leaves the body in a few hours and doesn’t have much impact on more concerning health issues, unfortunately.
I have made natto and also within the last month. You use store bought natto to inoculate your soybeans. Store bought come frozen from Japan and go for about $2 for a 3 pack.
Here are the best natto making instructions I have seen. I used them last time. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e0hjr6clnHM You must soak and then steam the soybeans. Boiling them does not work.....
He also has a regular old website with more details and comments.

Obviously, the best way is K2 supplements along with D3. As far as I know, the only food with decent amounts of K2 is natto

You are super serious about K2. You are in the K2 elite!
Pastured eggs and butter.
Danish cheeses.
Good for you!
Thank you for sharing a good homemade version.
I wish natto didn’t have so many carbs, though.
I am on Warfarin for an artificial heart valve. Vitamin K causes the blood to clot and will interfere with the valve.
So no V-K for me!

I chose an organic valve but the procedure resulted in an A-fib condition for me, putting me basically in the same boat. More than 5 years ago in my case. Recently checked, valve is holding up outstanding.
Tofu is the low carb version of soybeans and is eaten more widely than natto. I know some low carb people, and they are eating adzuki beans now for some carb intake. So adzukis have the seal of approval for some of the lo-carb crowd.
______ "2. Adzuki beans have a low glycemic index. Adzuki beans have a very low glycemic index, making them an ideal part of a healthy diabetic diet because they will not cause a blood sugar spike. They’re also high in fiber which helps manage blood sugar because fiber doesn’t require insulin to digest and will contribute to a longer feeling of fullness. Additionally, the soluble fiber in beans binds to cholesterol in the digestive system and removes it before it gets into circulation, lowering overall cholesterol levels."
“Vitamin K causes the blood to clot and will interfere with the valve.”
that’s vitamin K1 ... as best as i can determine by studying published medical papers and from what multiple doctors have told me, Vitamin K2 MK-7 form does not affect blood clotting one way or the other ...
but it’s most beneficial affect is to keep calcium in the bones and from building up in soft tissues ... the calcium-balancing role of K2 MK-7 was discovered when researchers were trying to figure out why folks taking warfarin had much higher incidents of heart attacks and discovered that said excess heart attacks was caused by a highly unusual buildup of calcium-based plaques in the coronary arteries, with subsequent research eventually revealing that warfarin interferes with the function of vitamin K2 MK-7 form, leading to the discovery of the calcium-balancing role of vitamin K2 MK-7 ...
