Hitting Disney where it hurts: Florida GOP threatens to strip Walt Disney World of its right to build anything it wants inside its theme park as feud over 'Don't Say Gay' bill escalates

Some Republican legislators in Florida are considering punishing Walt Disney World for taking a public stand against the so-called 'Don't Say Gay' bill by repealing a 55-year law that allows the company to govern itself.

Florida House Rep. Spencer Roach tweeted on Wednesday that lawmakers held two meetings this week to discuss revoking the 1967 Reedy Creek Improvement Act, which he said 'allows Disney to act as its own government.'

Spencer, a Republican, added: 'If Disney wants to embrace woke ideology, it seems fitting that they should be regulated by Orange County.'

The 1967 act, which was signed by then-Gov Claude Kirk, a Republican, created the Reedy Creek Improvement District, which encompasses about 25,000 acres in Orange and Osceola counties.

The district is governed by its 19 landowners, the biggest of them being Disney World. It is responsible for overseeing land use and providing essential public services, including fire protection, emergency medical services, water services, electricity, sanitation. The district also operates and maintains all public roads and bridges.

The enemy likes to say that Disney is only changing with the times. If that’s true, then the intent of Walt when he was given this dispensation has also changed and should be revoked. Change doesn’t work only one way. Should also remove any tax abatements.

The main roads are state and county. That’s why they’re patrolled by Orange County Sheriff Department.

Disney fights lawsuits and doesn’t like to settle. Parkgoers sometimes get injured by falling tree limbs and so on and try to sue and don’t win often.

Very sad about the little kid who was killed by the alligator on Disney property a few years ago. People from the midwest visiting FL for Disneyworld don’t know about alligators and keeping away from ponds etc.

“Disney always wins.”

Sure, and Coca-Cola won when they decided to pick a fight with Georgia over the election integrity law.

Except they didn’t. They caved.

I think this is great. Our future president Ron wins either way. People come to Disney, he wins. People avoid Disney but come to Florida anyway, he wins. America wins because Disney is not America. America is not Disney. They can EASD, and America still wins. Thank you President Trump, and godspeed Gov DeSantis.

I would say this is a good idea no matter what Disney did.

Disney has an established history of fighting with governments and winning. Just look at what they’ve done to copyright laws. And will be doing again soon probably. And previous fights with Florida.

When businesses think they can force the government to agree with them, all is fair. Disney has declared itself the arbiter of what the government should do. They have been getting special treatment since 1967 from the State of Florida. Maybe a special assessment is in order.

“Disney has already put the infrastructure in place, but Disney (or their allies) own it. So for Florida to take that stuff over they'll either have to pay Disney for the stuff, or build it themselves.”

That is not what is at stake.

Anything that Disney is providing via Reedy Creek Improvement District can be provided by Orange or Osceola counties - just at a higher cost to Disney when the counties raise taxes high enough to cover tag, tax, shipping, dealer prep, and options.

And installing a new widget in their park might take an additional 24 months when land use decisions are made by the counties instead of the company-owned Reedy Creek Improvement District. Maybe they are denied the widget outright under new, county oversight.

Disney was given Reedy Creek semi-autonomy in the 1960s because they said they would not come to Florida without it. They don't want to lose it.

This is a pressure point for the governor and the legislature.

No, no, no all you have to do is make DW meet Florida building codes. Being able to skirt them in the early days is what Disney sought and won. Now just “level the playing field” and revoke the perk. No take over of anything.

And they won’t lose it. Between their lawyers, and using PR to sway the public to pressure the legislators to stop this fight. It’s a pressure point all right, AGAINST the governor and legislature.

“Oh you want to control this area, OK, we’ll start by laying off all our public service workers, and here’s how much rent you’ll have to pay for those buildings”.

They will not rent the Disney buildings, they will operate out of some low end alternative. And that will be awesome for their parks to stop all their infrastructure. People love going to crime ridden areas with bad streets and crappy public services.

Disney will lose.

Some of the comments on this thread are pure gold. $:-)

Disney finds itself at the center of a rapidly-heating period of American's decades-old culture wars. A once venerated company that was infiltrated and subverted by homosexuals over many years, its power and influence now all too often used to promote a destructive agenda.

And now the normals, in Florida, have had enough. It is enlightening to see how far things could be pushed before everyman finally said 'Enough is enough'.

The perk comes with responsibility. That’s the structure of the deal. And Disney’s lawyers will make that clear. Take away the perk, take away the responsibility.

"Disney has an established history of fighting with governments and winning."

Gee, I guess we should just surrender to Disney and the Pink Mafia then.

You can’t really do a low end alternative to a municipal hospital. Fire stations. If the government lets the area collapse they’ll eat it. That’s the fun of elected representatives. They gotta keep the people satisfied.

Discussion is not banned.

That was my opinion too, but I decided I was more wrong than right.

3. Classroom instruction by school personnel or third parties on sexual orientation or gender identity may not occur in kindergarten through grade 3 or in a manner that is not age-appropriate or developmentally appropriate for students in accordance with state standards.
So it comes down to what "appropriate" means and what the "state standards" are. At the end of the day, that may not specifically mean "discussion is banned," but it's very close. Which is fine with me.

” If they don’t have total control of the land Florida will have to pay through the nose.”

No, Florida will not fund it above normal municipal levels. Disney/Globohomo will enjoy normal services and will not be the final say of everything in that area.

“Between their (Disney’s) lawyers, and using PR to sway the public to pressure the legislators to stop this fight.

If everyone is swayed as easily as you, Disney will win.

So will Biden.
