Hitting Disney where it hurts: Florida GOP threatens to strip Walt Disney World of its right to build anything it wants inside its theme park as feud over 'Don't Say Gay' bill escalates

Some Republican legislators in Florida are considering punishing Walt Disney World for taking a public stand against the so-called 'Don't Say Gay' bill by repealing a 55-year law that allows the company to govern itself.

Florida House Rep. Spencer Roach tweeted on Wednesday that lawmakers held two meetings this week to discuss revoking the 1967 Reedy Creek Improvement Act, which he said 'allows Disney to act as its own government.'

Spencer, a Republican, added: 'If Disney wants to embrace woke ideology, it seems fitting that they should be regulated by Orange County.'

The 1967 act, which was signed by then-Gov Claude Kirk, a Republican, created the Reedy Creek Improvement District, which encompasses about 25,000 acres in Orange and Osceola counties.

The district is governed by its 19 landowners, the biggest of them being Disney World. It is responsible for overseeing land use and providing essential public services, including fire protection, emergency medical services, water services, electricity, sanitation. The district also operates and maintains all public roads and bridges.

“They should be worried about their waters not having alligators in them that can kill children.”

Then who is going to stop Captain Hook?

Well that’s a grown up response. It’s no wonder why you act like a child.

Disney apparently has good lawyers. /s

I still fail to see the legality. I can’t believe this hasn’t been challenged, the least of which under the 14th Amendment.

But if you have enough $$... /s/s

Excellent. Screw Disney. They will take notice when you hit them where it counts - right in Goofy’s wallet.

“If they don’t have total control of the land Florida will have to pay through the nose.”

Or they can just not pay. They can just tell Disney they’ll provide them with the same level of services that they provide all rural residents of Orange County. Of course Disney could close up shop and take the tax revenue with them, but that’s about all the recourse they have against a government with sovereign immunity.

“Discussion is not banned.”

Once again you speak without knowing something. The bill specifically bans discussion in K-3 about sexual orientations and gender identity.

But providing that level of service will cost the state money. And if they don’t want to spend the upfront money to spin up the necessary resources (gotta have firehouses to provide fire services, municipal hospitals don’t grow on trees) they’ll have to buy them or rent them from Disney.

And that’s all after Disney’s lawyers have dragged this out in the courts.

How about getting rid of the copyright use that was extended to over a hundred years for disney.

“If you control the government, what’s the fear.”

Maybe they fear if they rest on their laurels, they’ll end up like the GOP in Colorado, or Nevada, or Pennsylvania, or Ohio, etc, etc. Maybe they recognize we are in an existential battle with an enemy that wants to destroy our civilization and that the old rules of civil politics no longer apply.

“If they (Disney) don’t have total control of the land Florida will have to pay through the nose.”

Let me get this straight. If the legislature repeals the Reedy Creek Improvement Act this will hurt Florida - “Florida will have to pay through the nose.”

So, will Disney oppose repeal in order to save Florida money? Under the current arrangement it must be Disney that is paying through the nose.

It looks like Disney might want to support repeal of Reedy Creek to economically punish Florida’s governor and the legislature - if your thinking is correct; which I doubt.

Just die Disney. Die.

(My family loves, or used to love everything about Disney. Not now. It would not bother me if Disney simply failed.)

Not in favor of government passing laws to force private businesses to agree with them.

This is how we get into issues with bakers and wedding cakes.

You guys flail around like the 3% of weirdos have a say. You want to jump up and down, and fight the same fight. Even though you just won.

Take the W. Tell your voters you listened and delivered.

Instead of getting worked up, go get a better marketing firm to get the message out. People like the message. But when you allow the opposition to create the message, you will fight uphill the entire time. The don’t say gay thing was a bumbled effort.

“But providing that level of service will cost the state money.”

No, it will cost the taxpayers money, and guess which taxpayer in Orange County is probably going to bear the brunt of the increased taxes and fees?

“...they’ll have to buy them or rent them from Disney.”

Or they can just seize them with eminent domain powers and then pay Disney whatever the government decides is a fair price, rather than what Disney demands.

There’s not a lot of good options for private companies that want to escalate in a fight with the government. Even a powerful company like Disney is at a disadvantage because the playing field will always be tilted in favor of the government. And Disney is not as powerful as they used to be after 2 years of lockdowns closing their parks and tanking the proceeds of all their blockbuster movies.

Disney has already put the infrastructure in place, but Disney (or their allies) own it. So for Florida to take that stuff over they’ll either have to pay Disney for the stuff, or build it themselves.

Also keep in mind Disney has deeper pockets than Florida. Disney can drop $71 billion buying Fox, the entire Florida state budget for this year is $101 billion.

Oh sure, because 3% of weirdos do not have functional control over one of the two political parties in the country. I must have dreamt that in my sleep.

The county will be aligned with Disney on the “if this is what you want you gotta pay for it” in the courts. The state will get the bill. Going through eminent domain will tie it up in court for another decade.

This isn’t the first time parts of Florida have tried to reign in Disney. Disney always wins. Disney is drastically more powerful than they used to be. Disney+ hit right before the lockdown. Any cash they lost on the theme parks has been more than made up for in subscriptions.
