I've been meaning to do a prepper thread for a while now and will do my best to start one the first Saturday of each month from here out.
When you start prepping, it's about stocking up on food, water and supplies and maybe having a BOB(Bug Out Bag) and a retreat to bug out to. That leads to moving to that retreat which is usually away from the cities and your retreat likely is larger than the typical city/suburb home lot. In fact, you probably have room to produce some of your needs. Basic prepping leads to living in a more self sufficient way and producing some of your needs. It's a natural progression and as such, I'm calling these threads, Prepping & Self Sufficiency threads.
In preparation for this, I've reworked my profile page and also included a lot of info that freeper Pete from Shawnee Mission has been collecting from past Weekly Gardening threads. Gardening is a part of prepping and self-sufficiency but I'm far from being an expert so be sure to join in the weekly gardening threads. The best way to find past gardening threads seems to be by doing a keyword or tag search for "gardening:. https://freerepublic.com/tag/gardening/index?tab=articles
Watch the animals. Let them teach you. Most of them do migrate for the seasons. Some do other things. It's also time for me to be considering age. Maybe the best thing for that would be a younger partner/pupil with moral character.
A couple method inspiring pictures:
Yesterday we went to the bank and took out some additional cash to stick in the sock drawer, filled up 5 five gallon gas cans and picked up 2 more propane tanks for the grill. Russia decoupling with the London central bank and likely defaulting on their loans is going to cause waves.
Food comes from some where be it meat, vegetables or fruits.
Somebodies have to do the necessary work from raising or
growing to harvesting, butchering and preserving.
A lot of online seed places are out of stock on many things.
I keep mine in with electric. Six strands of high tensile wire that runs at 8-9,000 volts.
You would think Spring of 2020 when the food and TP shelves were bare that it would have been a wake up call to everyone.
You would, but apparently not for some people.
Normalacy bias.
A “huge stockpile of ammo” just provides arms or your enemies when you are forced to bug out.
Have a reasonable supply to defend yourself but you may need to carry it all with you.
I am trying to find an article I read about some country like Venezuela that talks about what Happened when the Commies took over and civil unrest broke out.
He watched, hidden in the trees, while the fortresses were all attacked. People knew they had lots of supplies in there.

Homemade Plant Fertilizer: Urine + Ashes

In this study human urine was collected and stored in covered containers in the donors’ homes for two weeks in order to protect against pathogens. There is a wide range of opinions on how fresh the urine should be but allowing the urine to sit for a couple of weeks seems the safest of all of the approaches.

From that last link
Speaking of Sam’s, the one in Round Rock had Hellman’s Mayo 64 oz for $3.12. That is 1/2 gallon! Exp Sept.
I am glad to hear that. What is your strand spacing? 4” - 6” ?
If you have kids be sure to start looking for sales on sturdy type clothing. And purchase a few sizes up, for them to grow! Same with shoes right about now given the current economic environment/war environment.
Bars of soap, Irish spring is great for cleaning and keeping critters out of the garden.
Compost, compost, compost as fertilizer is going to be very pricy over the next few growing seasons.
Insecticides
My prepping circle is anticipating at least a 2 year difficult period of time. This is where having some self-sufficiency skills become valuable. We are talking about what is coming isn’t going to be like other recessions or even like the Carter years. It looks to be worse, much worse. We have about 60 days before the real mass panic hits.
I thought a good tip was to not only plant heirloom crops, have some that are hybrids to protect against full crop failure. So you have some ration to eat.
Security will become high on the agenda. Good tip was to get the plastic film for the windows that prevents them from shattering on your home.
LOL....that is a LOT of mayo.
I found a similar deal, last year, on a ½ gal of Duke’s mayo....and, bought it.
Hubby and kids were shaking their heads. I promised to make a LOT of potato and/or egg salad.....which....I never did 😩
Did you buy the Hellmans? (My fave mayo, btw.)
Bannon said, the other day, that if what looks like is coming (economically/supply chain, etc), does come (barring it being stopped...which, it doesn’t look like ANYONE is even trying)....it will make the 30s Depression look like a cake walk.
(Paraphrasing.)
That’s when we really kicked our preps BACK in to high gear.....Feb of 2020, when (many of us) saw shortages coming.
We stocked up on hub’s meds (since most Rx meds are made in ChyNah), as well.
Then, when the 2020 election was stolen, we topped everything off and/or added to, again.
