Ketogenic Diet for Obese COVID-19 Patients: Is Respiratory Disease a Contraindication? A Narrative Review of the Literature on Ketogenic Diet and Respiratory Function
Frontiers in Nutrition ^ | 2021 Dec 9 | Elena Gangitano et al

Posted on 02/20/2022 4:02:35 PM PST by tired&retired

Data obtained in respiratory patients, mainly lean, are indicative of the safety of low-carbohydrate high-fat diets in respiratory compromised patients, and some beneficial effects on respiratory parameters were recorded.

Keto Diet administration may be helpful for obese patients with chronic hypercapnia, thanks to the reduced CO2 production induced by the diet. Many respiratory patients are malnourished, and obese patients themselves are frequently sarcopenic, therefore an adequate protein supplementation is mandatory, since malnutrition may worsen the general prognosis.

Many supplements for malnourished patients are rich in carbohydrates, and this is detrimental for their respiratory function,....

Keto Diet has anti-inflammatory effects and may reduce the risk of cytokine storm, thanks to the anti-inflammatory effects of ketone bodies, and may have a direct anti-viral effect. Therefore, ketogenic diet may be an effective adjuvant therapy in obese non-critically ill COVID-19 patients, and may even be considered in respiratory lean patients.

New focused clinical trials with adequate sample sizes, led by a multidisciplinary experienced team of pneumologists, endocrinologists and nutritionists, are needed to confirm the safety and the beneficial effects on ventilatory parameters of such approach in respiratory patients.

"reduced CO2 production induced by the diet"

I'm trying to figure out the biochemical cause of the reduction in CO2 production. The ketones still get metabolized into Acetyl CoA and enter the Krebs Cycle thus I would still expect 2 CO2 molecules per cycle.

The U.S. military is considering putting its elite Navy SEALS on the high fat, ultra-low-carbohydrate keto diet because it may help them stay underwater longer, according to a June 14, 2019 Business Insider article.

The keto diet induces a metabolic change called ketosis, which causes the body to burn stored fat as energy rather than blood sugar. One of the side effects of the process is that it changes the way the body handles oxygen deprivation. David Ludwig, professor in the Department of Nutrition at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, explained in the article that ketosis reduces the amount of carbon dioxide produced by the body in relation to the amount of oxygen it consumes.

The buildup of carbon dioxide in the bloodstream is what triggers the need to breathe, he said, so being on the keto diet could enable someone to breathe less often.

The above article would lead one to the conclusion that most people with sleep apnea which causes hypoxia would benefit from a keto diet.

Well has this been a fairly well kept secret?:

Keto Diet has anti-inflammatory effects and may reduce the risk of cytokine storm, thanks to the anti-inflammatory effects of ketone bodies, and may have a direct anti-viral effect.

I tried Keto and lost 40 lbs in about 18 mos (225 to 185). I wasn’t real strict about it all the time, but when I was, I definitely lost weight.

I feel SOOOO much better. Joint pain gone. Snoring gone. Sleeping better, dreaming vividly. Six pack is emerging. Workouts better and more consistent. Much more energetic.

People need to check this lifestyle out.

And, oh, BTW, I’m 65 years old. You aren’t too old to make this work for you.

Please add me to the list. I lost over 50 lbs with ease on the keto diet in the last 6 months and feel so much better. Took a breather and now on the second 50.

Please add me to the ping list.

I did a search on the subject some months ago. Here is what I found,

“COVID-19: Proposing a Ketone-Based Metabolic Therapy as a Treatment to Blunt the Cytokine Storm.”

With what they know about comorbidities, it’s been inexcusable that they have not encouraged people to lose weight to reduce their risk.

Thanks for the link to an excellent article. I’m printing it out now for review.

It appears that this article addresses my question about the changes in the Krebs Cycle that cause decreased CO2 production during ATP production.

The conclusion per your article:

“11. Conclusions

The SARS-CoV-2 virus may become a sustained threat to lobal health. This review has described many of the molecular mechanisms through which an exogenous ketone-based metabolic therapy together with a moderately high-fat diet may stimulate host cell metabolism and defenses as a possible treatment to blunt the cytokine storm associated with severe SARS-CoV-2 infection. A clinical trial testing this therapy on patients with SARS-CoV-2 is warranted. In addition, further mouse IAV infection studies will aid in the determination of permissive dietary conditions under which exogenous ketone supplementation enhances immune function to facilitate viral clearance and decrease mortality.

Good for you!
I’ve been on keto almost 6mos, lost almost 30 & feel great.
This is the only diet that’s worked for me because can still eat good food.

Keto completely cured my sleep apnea, snoring stopped altogether once my weight dropped into the normal range. All the aches and pains of old age abate allowing me to work out and recover like I'm in my 20's again.

The keto reddit faq is on point: https://www.reddit.com/r/keto/wiki/faq

Healthy people aren't repeat customers. Hence they tell you to eat trash, then fill you with medication.

I keep waiting for the pain-reduction part to kick in.

I’ve been on normal keto since October. But my metabolism is weird, and I found out recently that because of that, I need to follow a really strict version of keto. Been on that for a week now. Don’t know yet if I’m losing weight, weigh-in is tomorrow. But my insomnia meds are suddenly so much more effective that I had to lower the dose, and my tonsils suddenly shrank. Neither of those was what I was looking for, but they do indicate that something is changing.
