What Is the Link Between Vitamin D and COVID-19?
https://scitechdaily.com ^ | FEBRUARY 17, 2022 | By UC DAVIS HEALTH

People get vitamin D from sun exposure, foods (such as fatty fish), and supplements.

A recent study has shown a correlation between vitamin D deficiency and COVID-19 severity and mortality.

The study is based on data from Israel’s first two coronavirus waves before vaccines were widely available. It found that people with a vitamin D deficiency are more likely to develop a severe or critical case of COVID-19 compared to people who had sufficient levels of the vitamin in their blood.

Patients with a vitamin D deficiency were 14 times more likely to have a severe or critical case of COVID-19. Additionally, the mortality rate for those with insufficient vitamin D levels was 25.6%, compared with 2.3% among those with adequate levels.

To learn more about the correlation between vitamin D levels and COVID-19 outcomes, we turned to UC Davis Health’s Chief of Infectious Diseases Stuart Cohen.

What is the link between vitamin D deficiency and COVID-19 infections? Vitamin D plays a role in the body’s immune system and is known to enhance the function of immune cells. In this case, Vitamin D inhibits some of the inflammation that can make COVID-19 more severe.

What do the latest studies say?

Recent studies suggest that vitamin D deficiency is an independent risk for more severe disease regardless of age or weight. It is also possible that vitamin D deficiency increases the risk of getting infected with COVID-19, however that makes less immunological sense.

Could vitamin D be used to treat patients with COVID-19?

Supplementing vitamin D may play a role in treating patients, but the data is relatively weak at this time. It surely is not a way to treat COVID-19 in and of itself.

What other conditions are linked to vitamin D deficiency?

Vitamin D deficiency is primarily associated with bone health and osteoporosis. There has also been some research that suggests it may also play a role in cardiovascular diseases and has some links to other infections.

How common is vitamin D deficiency?

To analyze this question, we need to look at a combination of what is defined as vitamin D deficiency and insufficiency, which equals about 25% of the population in the United States.

Why do we need vitamin D?

Vitamin D is important for bone health, heart health, and keeping the immune system working appropriately. It is also an important factor in appropriate muscle function.

What are the best sources of vitamin D?

Most vitamin D comes from direct sunlight on the skin. It’s also found in foods such as fatty fish, egg yolks, and fortified dairy products. Mushrooms are one of the few non-animal sources of vitamin D.

How much vitamin D does a person need daily?

Exposure to sunlight triggers vitamin D synthesis in the skin. Adults who do not have regular, effective sun exposure year-round should consume at least 600 to 800 international units. It also should be noted that people with darker pigmented skin are at higher risk for low concentrations of vitamin D.

Not impressed with this article.

What? Don't you know Vitamin D cures and prevents everything?

If you only would take mega doses every day you can live just as long as Methuselah.

My wife and I have been taking D3, zinc, C, and a multi-vitamin ever since this thing started. We had the original vax very early on. But, no boosters since. We are constantly out in the public daily. If we ever caught covid, it was never anything more than a sniffle and we never noticed.

I didn’t know that. I use Metagenics Bone Builder. The recommended daily dosage of 3 tablets on the bottle = 600 mg total daily, which is “75% of the daily recommended.”

But how many international units (iu) is 600 mg?

D&D

Never heard of Turkey Tail.

I take 5000 D3, quercertin, 50 mg zinc, 2000 C, NAC and a couple others...still I got COVID but I think it’s the omicron. Dr wouldn’t give me anything - so I added horse paste until my ivermectin arrives from India. The horse paste seemed to really help - now I’m down to a dry cough.

Sunlight: Optimize Health and Immunity (Light Therapy and Melatonin)[Sunlight as medicine-Vitamin D isnt enough]

Important information for people that want to understand the root causes of much of modern disease. Supplements are good but this explains why sunlight is better. Its the IR penetration that makes a big difference.

Vitamin D under 10000 a day causes no ill effects.

That’s too much.

Laboratories don’t offer tests of deactivated vitamin d.

From research reports, one can predict that most of the vitamin d you take is converted to deactivated vitamin d.

Check your units. 50 micrograms of Vitamin D is 2,000 IU, so 600 milligrams of Vitamin D is 24 million IU. Rather a lot, I’d say.

Taking more than the optimal amount reduces the benefits.

People with a vitamin d level of 32 ng/ml have higher testosterone than people with higher or lower levels.

People with a vitamin d level of 50 ng/ml have more kidney stones than people with 32 ng/ml.

Excess vitamin d reduces vitamin k and gamma tocopherol. It can probably cause a gamma tocopherol deficiency.

I’ve been getting physicals for decades.

Nor every year, but most.

Until 2020 I’d never had a doc order a D3 test.

This was ordered along with my usual panel and I never got an explanation for the order.

Mine was fine, BTW.

I would be interested to see stats on D3 tests ordered for the 2 and a half years. How many, when, the age distribution of the patients, insurance coverage.

Bet those stats would tell an interesting tale.

Thanks. The label says 15 mg Vit. D per day / serving. I didn’t have my reading glasses on. The 600 mg was referring to the calcium, not D.

Probably 15 mcg. 15 mg is 1000 times that.

Have been taking L-Lysine (virus inhibitor) for years - when Covid hit I included D3, Zinc, and extra C.

Also, don't smoke or drink and keep my weight down. Healthy people have much less risk of Covid-itis.
