Italian police have discovered the mummified remains of a 70-year-old woman sitting at a table more than two years after she died, prompting calls for better care for older people in the country.
Marinella Beretta, who had no living relatives, was found in her house in Prestino near Lake Como in northern Italy. Police stumbled upon her remains when they made a house call during high winds in Lombardy, which risked uprooting neglected trees in her garden.
She had not been seen by neighbours for at least two and a half years, according to Italian media reports.
Her neighbours, who had not seen Beretta since September 2019, assumed she had moved away at the start of the coronavirus pandemic, which hit northern Italy in 2020, the reports said. Police found nothing at the scene to suggest foul play...

Who’s the dummy now ?
It’s the garlic
Thank you for making me laugh.
Yep, something does NOT add up in this story. It's likely BS to setup some other narrative or agenda, still to unfold.
A recluse neighbor around the corner from me, lived alone, never had visitors, died and was not discovered for 6 months.
Due to the foul odor damage, the insurance company 'totaled' the house as unrepairable. It was demolished. A new house stands there today, presumably the new owner/occupants have no idea of the history on their lot - I know I wouldn't tell them.
I remember a story in Germany some years ago where a guy hadn’t been seen for 5 years. His disability payment went into his bank account and rent and utilities taken our automatically. The price of stuff exceeded his pension so when they came to check, they broke in an found a skeleton in a robe sitting in a chair. They determined his date of death because of the TV guide was open on his lap to a date. The tv was off so it must have failed
Gotta get me one of those.
God knows we need humor these days!
Well the lady had good balance to keep sitting up for so long after she passed!
I wish our HOA was as rambunctious as this woman’s neighbors.
What actually happened to the woman? What does it mean “sitting at a table?” Seems odd to die in a sitting position (except like I am, in my recliner. That could happen).
I found this article incredibly frustrating. More focused on policy than on the person.
There is a Quincy episode about several mummified people in a boarding house.
Creepy one.
Remember the swinging light bulb which made the shadows in "Mom's" eye sockets move from side to side? That was a nice touch!
You win the thread.
Yeah, great neighbors. Even in the depths of NYCity neighbors complain enough that coppers are called in.
“She had not been seen by neighbours for at least two and a half years, according to Italian media reports.”
And there lies the problem. None of her neighbors even bothered to check. We have a guy across the street who people had not seen in a while. His garbage can is always on the street. So I told them I would check with my surveillance cameras. What I did was look at the garbage cans and see if they moved. The pickup is every Wednesday. They did move a little over the week. By that I was able to trace the movement and see him come out to the garbage can and confirming that he is OK.
After living in Italy part time last year, tons of junk mail is stuffed in mailboxes, fences and littering the ground. It isn’t a big deal and most ignore it so I doubt that would have been a red flag.
Some old people are so dehydrated they are nearly mummified when they are still alive. My grandfather was skin and bones and dry as fall leaves the last few of his 96 years. He hardly ate anything and had almost no body odor.
Also, lack of humidity could have been a factor if she died during the dry winter months.
I’m sure there would be odor and decomposition - but the amount could vary quite a bit, depending on the extent of dehydration at time of death and shortly thereafter.
Was the table mummified or the lady?
The entire state.
The entire state was mummified.
People driving through couldn’t figure out why traffic was so light for the last two years.
I have Italian relatives and they can sit at a table almost that long.
