Researchers have developed a lithium-air battery with an energy density of over 500Wh/kg -- significantly higher than currently lithium-ion batteries. The research team then confirmed that this battery can be charged and discharged at room temperature. In addition, the team found that the battery developed by the team shows the highest energy densities and best cycle life performances ever achieved. These results signify a major step toward the practical use of lithium-air batteries.

One reason this is significant: from an energy density standpoint 500 wh/kg (roughly twice that of current LI electric vehicle batteries) is considered to be the cross-over point at which battery-electric propulsion becomes economically competitive or even superior for large commercial aircraft.
Also, LA batteries can potentially have very short recharge times - "gassing up" an EV with a LA battery might take as little as 6-10 minutes.
But there is still a lithium shortage.
Trying to catch up on all the solar/battery/EV stuff. I am aware the battery is the biggest hurdle right now. Hope this is successful and practical.
A quick google search shows that gasoline has an energy density of 12,200 Wh/kg, or about 24x the battery technology discussed here, and without any dead load other than an empty gas tank, and no dependence on chinese spodumene.

Anyone with even a basic understanding if thermo engines knows that most of that energy is lost to heat and not available to power the car.

EV are worse but their inefficiencies are upstream of the consumer, so they don’t, like, even exist, amirite?
You can only cram so much energy into the chemical bonds of the appropriate elements for battery chemistry. The more you cram the more unstable meaning the more like fires or something more energetic. Research is to find the “sweet spot” between usefulness & instability. I doubt if you ever reach the energydensity of gasoline.

Many of the EV car co’s are moving towards solid state batteries that uses little to no lithium and are fast charging and 100% recylable. A company called Quantam space uses a lithium free battery and claims theirs will charge in 8-12 minutes and will have a 700-750 mile range. It will be out in 3-4 years
The free market will prevail.

EVs are a dictator’s wet dream.
There are so many of these battery breakthrough gamechangers in the works that some have just got to actually reach the market in the not too distant future.
1000 mile ev car that charges in 10 minutes will be a big gamechanger. For the typical person, that’s a charge once a week or longer.
Ev’s aren’t free market.
Ev’s are the result of companies being forced to obey BS greenie laws from California. Which now states like Washington are using as a basis for their state Air laws.
As TX Gator notes, a gasoline engine is only 25-30% efficient, so multiply that 12,200 by 0.25 off the bat. Now you’re down to 6x the energy density. Add in some savings due to regenerative braking and not needing a transmission. It’s edging closer to being competitive.

How so? A dictator can shut off gas supplies.
An EV can be recharged with solar panels you and your neighbors set up in your back yard.
Companies are working on home solar panel chargers that charge these cars. The technology is not there yet but it will be.
Ev companies are working on molded into shape solar panels that will replace steel panels and will charge your car while your car is outside, at work etc.
Not there yet but it will be.
You can optimize a powerplant for efficiency a little more than you can an automobile engine, because it doesn’t have to move, runs at one speed all of the time, can be more flexible as far as cost, etc. Hydroelectric dams aren’t heat engines, so their “efficiency” is like 98-99%. The newest natgas gas turbine - steam turbine combined cycle plants are pushing 70% efficiency.
EV technologies are like velvet handcuffs. They make you feel better but it’s all done so you don’t notice the extreme artificial and arbitrary constraints imposed by a centralized government.

If not lithium, what?
Toyota, Volkswagon and Panasonic have also made major investments is solid state battery technology.
All the major automobile manufacturers are making investments in solid state batteries. They have to or potentially get left behind.
The idea is that the batteries will actually outlast the vehicle they are installed in. Thirty year batteries are what I recall reading about 6 months in a Toyota article.
