One could also conclude that it’s evidence for Something Else who’s name is much shorter than “string theory.”

Oy, Vey!
Presumptive values. accepted facts (and here I thought facts were, and must be, by nature, an immutable truth?)
Scheme- lots of them, it seems, are necessary to fill in all the gaps.
Yeah, call me the “classical skeptic” of all this “science” (theory, really, as most if not all is either assumed or based on a certain set of premises that are self-limiting to one philosophical position....).
But anyway, where would we be without brilliant minds like Ray Bradbury and others of like genre?
Sure, we are observing unique and hard-if-not-impossible to define things in the world and universe around us, but once the premise as to how and why are focused solely on chance and accident, then other more enthralling options are by force of consensus, eliminated.
I am sure and certain that there is more to the story than this (hint, a story requires an author and a storyteller....).

I stopped reading. Maybe I am not interpreting the semantics or perhaps it's poorly written, but why would you ever be surprised when "To bootstrap is to deduce new facts about the world by figuring out what’s compatible with known facts" gives you results similar to "Their bootstrapped number closely matched the prediction for the number made by string theory"??? It sounds to me like two similar (if not the same) ways to arrive somewhere theoretically.

String, it’s simple.
If it has two ends, it’s string.
If it has no ends, it’s a loop.
If it has more than two ends,
it means you’re on a party line.

I heard a technical discussion of that topic on NPR with Kamala Harris and AOC trying to make the difficult concepts understandable to us common folks. I couldn’t follow./S
