Indonesia’s parliament has approved a bill to relocate the nation’s capital from Jakarta to a jungled area of Kalimantan on Borneo island, the planning minister said on Tuesday.

The new state capital law, which provides a legal framework for President Joko Widodo’s ambitious $32 billion mega project, stipulates how development of the capital will be funded and governed.

The new center will be called “Nusantara”, a Javanese name for the Indonesian archipelago chosen by the president, Monoarfa announced on Monday.

Plans to relocate the government from Jakarta, a bustling megacity of 10 million people that suffers from chronic congestion, floods and air pollution, have been floated by multiple presidents, but none have made it this far.

I’ve been to Brasilia and it is everything the rest of Brazil is not, clean, well organized, with little street life (positive and negative). All of the after work/weekend “action” takes place in a container strip of restaurants and bars constructed on an artificial lake.

I’ve thought about whether there should be an amendment to the Constitution that every state has to set aside public land to host a new Federal capital district every 40-50 years.

Enough for a generation or two, but not enough to allow a longstanding culture of corruption to become entrenched in one part of the country. It would force the government to be close to communities in other states.

Lived two years in Jakarta 1973-75. Things must have changed dramatically for the worse.

Borneo (Kalimantan) sounds like a strange choice. It is the 3rd largest island in the world, but lacking in infrastructure. Brunei and Malaysia share part of the island. It will be interesting to see if this is adopted. Massive capital investment is needed. Sounds like another Abuja or Brasilia, neither of which has proven successful.

This is probably going to pass, because of the Tonga volcanic eruption and memories of the Boxing Day tsunami.

According to the article, it already has been passed.

the politicians will fit in wonderfully with the cannibals on Borneo

Jakarta is Calcutta, just smaller.

I watched the events leading to the May 1998 overthrow of Suharto from my hotel window. Like reliving the “Year of Living Dangerously”. I thought it was cool at the time.

In the early morning hours military trucks would wind their way into the city with loads of rice. They would park in out of the way places and people would come to get their rations. Some would drive up in a Mercedes and they would load a whole bag of rice in the trunk. Most people just got an allocation.

Where is the Muslim dominance over there? Is Borneo or still Jakarta?

I was supposed to make an overnight “courtesy” trip to Jakarta back in the ‘70s. Then, the big thing Jakarta was known for was almost immediate dysentery upon arrival. Fortunately, our plane from Singapore developed a serious problem and had to return to Singapore. Spent the rest of the day in the hotel bar and then headed back to Tokyo.

I talked to a civil engineer in Hong Kong many years ago. He said the only way to fix the infrastructure problems in Jakarta was to burn it down and start over.

Maybe the government there agrees? Or maybe they want a location that is tsunami proof.

Nigeria did something similar, moving their capital out of Lagos to Abaju.

Well, I proposed in a recent episode of my podcast that we move the US capital to Kimball, Nebraska.

Dang, I have some serious catching up to do on your podcast. Thanks for reminding me. I am mostly listening to my classic radio shows podcasts on my metal detecting booze walks, but I haven’t forgotten about you.

Since Jakarta will not be a capital, could we move DC there? Just think... Maryland and Virginia red...

But then, we might need to figure out what to do with all the empty buildings? Offices for private businesses? Only department I want in DC is the Pentagon.

RE: We need to relocate our capital to a more centrally located part of the country.

Kansas is geographically right smack in the center of this country’s mainland. Do you really want the deep state tainting conservative Kansas?
