Lived two years in Jakarta 1973-75. Things must have changed dramatically for the worse.

Borneo (Kalimantan) sounds like a strange choice. It is the 3rd largest island in the world, but lacking in infrastructure. Brunei and Malaysia share part of the island. It will be interesting to see if this is adopted. Massive capital investment is needed. Sounds like another Abuja or Brasilia, neither of which has proven successful.

I was there in the late 1980's. I suspect it had changed quite a lot in fifteen or so years. Look at what's happened in some US cities in that time.

But living in a place is completely different than being a business visitor. The types of customs games and overt bribing demanded to do business in Indonesia were off putting. And the city itself seemed like an urban "Heart of Darkness". It wasn't the people. I'd never felt the same sense of "evil" in Malaysia, with similar people. That said, it might be down to a Dutch versus a British colonial foundation.
