A Better 9mm? Federal Introduces the 30 Super Carry Self Defense Handgun Cartridge
Field and Stream ^ | 16 jan 2022 | Richard Mann

Federal has introduced a new cartridge that has been specifically designed for those who carry a concealed pistol for personal protection. They’re calling it the 30 Super Carry. From an external and terminal ballistics standpoint, the 30 Super Carry will run right with the 9mm, but offers some advantages. It generates between 10 and 20 percent less recoil, for one thing. And maybe more importantly, given magazines of the same size, it offers a higher capacity than the .380 Auto or 9mm Luger. How did Federal achieve this? They borrowed from what they learned in 2008 while developing the .327 Federal Magnum.

I don’t argue with that.

I like the .357, but I like the .4’s more.

.357 jn a GP 100 is a lot easier on the hands than in an SP 101 and even more accurate. I have both.

I used to cring every time I introduced a new cartridge into my product line. LOL! My grumpy old guy that chambered barrels would flip and in very colorful terms ask what the hell was wrong with what cartridges we used already.

Gotta sell more guns is all I would tell him. ROTFLMAO!

I’ve considered getting some sabots and playing with those.

Price for Federal ammo is .62 a round and it’s out of stock.

Its hard to see the need to upgrade 9mm ballistics for close in pistol combat.

There are plenty of "free" places to go in Idaho. My principal concern is ensuring the "downrange" is actually clear of humans. The free spots tend to be shared with people doing other things that are oblivious to the hazard of fast moving lead.

Nice. The Ruger 1911 10mm was my first. Lots of mass soaks up the recoil, but limited magazine capacity. The Springfield Armory Xdm with 5" barrel, Bomar sights and 15 rd mag is better for carrying capacity. The 3" GP100 is a fine sidearm. The short barrel sacrifices some muzzle velocity. The new S&W will deliver a 4.6 inch barrel, 15 rd mag and optics ready slide.

The Sig V-Crown ammo in 10mm is first rate. I've done some plinking with the 180 gr Prvi Partizan with good accuracy. On the shelf, but not yet evaluated is a box of the ARX 10mm 90g @ 1780 fps.

I do like Glocks. Lots of their 9mm models in the collection. My first one was a 23C in 40 S&W. The original owner shot a squib and tried to drill it out. Wrecked the factory barrel. It was replaced with a 3rd party barrel with full support of the case head. No ballooned case heads means reloadable brass...and I do.

That's an excellent score on the 38 Super. I really like my S&W 460 and 500, but the ammo is very expensive. My local FFL had automated his 4473 records, then discovered the IT guy (an employee) was stealing from him. He fired the guy and days later got a notice from ATF that they would be coming by to inspect his books. Cutting to the chase, I booted his Linux box with a system restore CDROM, dug around and located a mySQL database hosting his records and wrote a short SQL export to CSV to rescue his data. Quid pro quo was some nice ammo for the 460 & 500 that wasn't selling well due to the high cost. I scored some great ammo and he successfully weathered the ATF inspection/audit.

I very much admired both the 38 Super pistol and ammo profiles, but availability was an issue. The pistol and shop that sold it are long gone. For years, my preferred range plinker was 38SPL. I would load 1200 rds a month. My wife and I would burn through 400 rds a week. Saturday night was "laundry night" for the 38SPL brass. Into the Dillon vibratory cleaner. Sunday evenings I would put Matt Drudge up on KOGO AM, set up the Dillon 550 for 38SPL and crank out 1200 rds. My wife is comfortable doing 38SPL reloads on the Dillon as well, so we sometimes did a switch off on the reloading tasks. In a pinch, the single stage RCBS press is perfectly fine the lower throughput.

Since moving to Idaho, I do less reloading. My garage was a comfortable place to do that in San Diego. My garage serves as a "free" refrigerator for cold storage during the Winter in Idaho. Not a pleasant spot for reloading.

My town has a bunch of custom firearms builders. One of the guys does CNC machine work for INL as his day job. Off hours, he has a full CNC in his garage. He does lot of custom slide cuts for optics. When I needed ATF acceptable engraving on my SBR lower, he had the tools to do it. Out at the outdoor range, I ran into Dallas Layne. He's the sole proprietor at Layne Precision Rifles. Very high quality work. He was test firing some custom builds before delivering to the customer.

The Idaho Long Range Shooters have multiple long distance ranges in eastern Idaho. Someday I'll take my 6.5 Creedmoor out for a go on the 500 and 1000 yard ranges. There are some 2000 yard ranges, but mostly the 50BMG people are using those. If one is inclined to the high end shooting, there are plenty of options here.
